View Full Version : Engine slightly misaligned . . .

Ok, I am tired of finding things to worry about on my car, but I think this does warrant attention. If you look at the engine from the front of the car, it does not look like it is perfectly aligned parallel to the centerline of the car. I have a shock tower brace that gives a good reference point, and the back of the engine definitely appears to be skewed slightly towards the driver side.
Again, this is subtle, I don't know if it is significant and always been there and I just didn't notice, or if something has gone wrong. I looked at the engine mounts and transmission mounts really quick and they appeared ok (I have poly bushings at all four spots).
I am just wary that the extra power has twisted or broken something.
Anyone else have this happen?

what about the trans mounts?
Has the car ever been in an accident?

I have had the car 7 years and to my knowledge it has never been in an accident. I did look at the transmission mounts and they appeared fine. Perhaps it is nothing, but I just find it odd I never noticed it before if this is not a new thing.

It's normal, the E36 drivetrain is ~1/2" offset. As long as the engine, trans, diff line up you're fine.

do you have any clunking noises in the drivetrain? especially coming from a stop (in first or reverse)?

I took a closer look at the transmission mounts today, and the passenger side one is indeed malformed on the top. It looks like the mounting bolt/plate was twisted out of the urethane. I have already emailed Rob L. and I am sure he will take care of this. Anyone running the generation two transmission mounts with a higher HP car? I don't want to use the same mounts if they will just fail once a year . . .

Odd that you say this, because I have a occasional clunk noise when I engage 1st gear from a stop (from neutral).
What do you think is it?
