I'm looking at buying a high mileage 1994 530i (152K). It is cosmetically perfect. New high dollar BMW wheels and tires. It drove well. I know about the "soft recall" on the nikasil 3L V8's. How can I tell if the engine is the original or has been replaced? The current owner has only owned it for a short while. Can the VIN number and a trip to the BMW dealer do any good?
Thanks,

I am answering my own post. I've had time to do more research and found good info on the Nikasil issue.
For the bottom line and some links check out:

The engine casting numbers will tell which M60 engines are Nikasil and which are Alusil.
The casting numbers are as follows
Nikasil M60B30 1 725 970 or 1 741 212
Nikasil M60B40 1 725 963 or 1 742 998
Alusil M60B30 1 745 871
Alusil M60B40 1 745 872
Alusil M62B44 1 745 873 (Note all M62 motors are Alusil)
Hope this helps others looking for this info.
