Hello,

I just bought a 2001 740i. I want to get lock lugs for the wheels. Does anyone have any suggestions?

The car is in beautiful condition. A couple nuicance items are:
1) Glove compartment latch sticks and won't latch priperly. Is that an easy fix?
2) The hood release is weird...I have to hold the release down in the car and open the latch through the nostril...any suggestions on a repair?
3) The car has never been in an accident. However, the airbag indicator light is on, as are the dsc light and abs indicator lights. Could this be a fuse problem?

Thanks!

Its me Rocky, with the grey seven and angel eyes, oh well:rolleyes

Im about to get some locks as well. I believe you can get them from any stealer for $50, or check "soaps" on nostrand and lincoln road in Brooklyn.

1) I'm not sure, but can take a look for you.
2) seams like your bumper stops are gone.= the things (2-4 of them) that pops the hood up when you pull the latch inside the car.
3) not sure

Okay thanks...I'm not so much worried about where to get them so much as what size...9/16? Thanks Duke

you want BMW lock nuts, which should be one size fits all. the ones with a actual key. not the cheap one any one can get a socket for, although i guess those would be better than nothing.

Welcome here. Your hood problem may be your bumper/ejector stops $8 ea., they lift the hood a little so it doesn't relatch. It certianly doesn't hurt to check all fuses for condition and size. Not sure about the ABS and DSC, but a common problem on the air bag not reseting is the passenger occpancy sensor, (a bypass device is available fo $30). The air bag needs a special tool to reset. Good luck with your recent purchase.

That's great, I will look at the bumpe/ejector stops...thanks for the tip. The car was recently serviced and looked over with a clean bill of health so to me the indicators are a pesky problem. Thanks again!

I forgot to mention go to e-38.org, there are several glove box fixes. Also check out http://www.meeknet.co.uk/e38/Index.htmx, he has some great articles.

Welcome to the forum and most of that stuff can be picked up at the dealer. The stuff is cheap enough that the shipping cost would make it cost more that just going and picking it up. +1 if that's the passenger airbag light. More annoying than anything else. ABS and DSC lights could be a wheel sensor and is cheaper than the module.:redspot

If I didn't buy my car from a dealer, are these still parts I could order from a dealer? Is it something I could swap out on the car myself, or am I better having a mechanic take care of it? I consider myself to be pretty handy and quick to learn....I am also slowly restoring a 1978 Cadillac so I'm getting pretty familiar with how things work. Would a wheel sensor need to be relaced or is it also worth checking fuses?

If it does end up being the ABS module, which they should be able to tell you from pulling the codes, it is likely in the same spot as the one that went kaput on my E39. It is pretty deep under the center console and directly attached to the chassis. Along with the sensors in the seats and elsewhere that is how it rates the severity of the crash to determine what, and how fast, to deploy. It was a $300+ part for the E39. Just a little $300+ plastic box. I already had it at the shop to diagnose the light so I just wimped out and let them do it.

Thank you for that information. The engine was power washed and caused a hose to come loose, which in turn caused the engine to cut out after idling for about 15 minutes. I wonder if any of that was related? It has been reconnected since but I haven't driven it since so maybe the issue will go away. I'd like to not have to spend $300.00 on clearing that light. Is there any danger driving with it (ABS/DSC light) on until I can get it taken in? And the air bag light, all three are connected to this wheel sensor issue, possibly?

I meant to say the SRS module in my last post, sorry. Not ABS.

If the airbag light is on that means your SRS system has a problem, and if you get in an accident it is possible that nothing will work. So yeah, it would be dangerous to drive around with that on.

This one (the airbag one):

Possibly. To know for sure unless you get the light to go away through fixing your wheel sensor issue, you need to go get the codes pulled to see if the SRS module is operational or not.

Okay thank you...so maybe I should save my pennies and take it in to a dealer to have them service the vehicle and check the codes? I'd prefer to stay away from self-fixing electronic components if I dont have to

When the SRS (airbag light) is illuminated...it doesn't mean that the airbags won't operate...it's more than likely the opposite.

BMW will err on the side of safety...in that the system may operate outside of the "normal response range" of an air bag. For instance, the front passenger seat has an occupancy sensor...if the SRS warning light is illuminated due to a fault in that sensor and (God forbid) you are in a frontal or side collision...the front passenger airbag may go off even if no one is sitting in the seat...or if in a side impact, the front passenger door airbag may deploy. This would be "outside the normal response range". :)

This could also be dangerous though...because the impact could be on the passenger side, and the airbags on the driver's side could deploy. If you were injured and then tried to sue BMW...they would more than likely (through discovery) read the modules from your car and see that the SRS warning light was on. Thus you'd probably lose your case due to the warning in the owners manual that says that the airbags may not work within the normal operating range when the SRS warning light is on.
