need an answer

my key stopped working and I reached the 10 key limit for my 97 328i and I have an extra key a mechanic left me that will lock and unlock all the doors but not start the car. can't I have the key programmed for my car, I've tried asking around about it but can't get a straight answer.

Does the key turn the ignition cylinder?

If it does, then the dealership (or anyone with a functional DIS/GT1 system) should be able to align it to the EWS.
