I have a new 335 and an still working out the bugs. I have been running my iPod on the center USB, but I guess it doesn't charge. My dealer said it only charges through the front USB if you have the iPod option, which I do. But nothing plays through the front. Not an iPod or even a USB. It lets me set the volume, and seems to see something because its not shadowed.
Is there some trick I'm missing? In the center USB, it immediately pops up as seeing my iPod on the NAV screen.

I have a 2011 335i and using the standard iPod cable, it charges, plays, controls, and displays the album art as it should through the USB connector in the center armrest. I have iDrive with the Navigation Pro system, too.

My iPod touch stopped working through the USB until one day I decided to completely shut it (the ipod) off and back on. Maybe the playback support depends on the type of iPod you have.

Mine works through the center USB, but doesn't charge. The sales guy said most 3s don't have the USB in the glovebox. That one doesn't work for any devices I own. I did re-boot my ipod twice after a total batter run out as it was playing a song. So I know its connected. I'll keep an eye on it. I have two iPod classics, one for each car. I'll try switching them too.

The USB in my center console connects and charges my touch. I was told the USB in the glove box was used by the techs to download and update software and information in the car. I am not sure how accurate that is since he was surprised that there was even a USB port in the glove box. At any rate I use the USB in the glove box to charge my phone.

Description of the glove box USB port according to my owner's manual:
"Port for importing and exporting data on USB devices, e.g. music collections"
It also states the following should not be connected to this port: fans, lamps, USB hard disks. It also states that it should not be used to "recharge external devices".
There is more information later in the manual describing how to use it to import/export music collections.
It doesn't look like it can be used to plug in an iPod or other audio source for playback.

Thanks. I was on the wrong patch based on the service guy at the dealer telling me to use that port. The input on the NAV screen says "AUX Front", but I guess that is just the 1/8 jack that is also in the armrest.
I see my iPod is actually charging in the center, but get zapped by the car occasionally and need a full reset. I thought that was a full battery drain, but its just another issue. This iPod worked in my last car, so its just not getting along with this one. What's new though.
I'm glad the BMW handles gapless playback. Its really weak that a Lincoln with NAV and a CTS don't handle that. The HD radio is sweet too. We have a local Jazz station that is only on the digital band.
Thanks guys. These comments all helped work through this.
