What size wheels do I need for a 97 328i E36?
Looking to replace my stock 15" wheels with 17" wheels.
Thanks in advance for any help.

I think 17s are the way to go.
Purely street you could use 7.5. Something with 40mm or so offset.
If you wanted to do some auto X and street go for 8.
If you want stance then do 8 and up with an offset of 20mm or lower.

Why an 8" wheel for autox? I have 8.5" Koseis and think everyday about getting something wider... go 8.5" or 9" square in 17s or 8.5" upfront and 9" or 9.5" in the back.

just picked up a 96 dakar m3, on stock ds2's. not looking to get new staggered tires for them, but i have oz superleggeras brand new in 17x8 all four corners. not looking to thread jack, but i was looking at 235/40/17 or 235/45/17 all around.
looking like i may need a 5mm spacer or so for the front, not positive of the offset as right now i'm 300 miles away from them.
any input?

Go with 235/40/17... and your offset is most likely 40.

Yes I've had Koseis as well. I was saying as a mix of street and track. I was trying to give him a general idea, as he didn't list a single specific as how he uses the car.

This may be a dumb question.
Will 5 x 120 wheels from an X5 fit on an E 36 328i?

They would work I guess, X5s have the 74.1mm hub so you would need hub-centric rings.
Please tell me they are 17s, not 19s or 20s.
If they are 17" then they are 7.5 wide and high offsets so it should work.
I would think they would be heavy, and that would be a bummer.

Yes, they are 17".
Never considered the weight........might be something to reconsider.

I would find out the weight before getting them, wheel weight makes a very noticeable difference.
