I did a light detail this morning: washed, clayed, waxed, waxed again). I actually got an idea to use some of my roomates CLR spray cleaner that we use for the kitchen and random crap. It worked really well. I hadn't put any wax on my wheels since putting summers on the car, so they blackened every two days. The CLR took it right off, and it's cheap and you can buy it at the grocery store.

If you clean your wheels regularly, most any wheel cleaner will remove crud and brake dust without too much trouble.
If you leave it too long, you'll need something more powerful than normal.
Extra strength cleaners I've personally used and found to be effective are: Top of the Line Tire cleaner (works on wheels too), Brown Royal, Meguiar's Wheel Brightener, in approx. cleaning power. (MWB is nasty stuff because it contains Hydroflouric Acid and is nasty for living tissues like your spleen and everything else organic you may possess and it will stain bare aluminum)

An extra strength cleaner I'd want to try is the new Sonax Full Effect wheel cleaner. It goes on green and turns red when it dissolves metal bits. It's supposed to be very effective on old brake dust as well but again, I haven't used the Sonax stuff.

Good luck,
