Taking parts to Germany

I know we usually look around Europe for parts to bring here, but in this case an acquaintance found something in the US that they wish to take back to Germany - some engine parts for an older car. Is there any problem at the US customs end exporting used auto parts for personal use, or bringing them into Germany? The person taking them is a German citizen on a student visa in the US.
