View Full Version : Goodyear Eagle F1 GS-D3 Good or Bad?
Hey guys!
I am in dire need of some new tires. My Kumho ECSTA Supra 712's are so bold they look like slicks - literally. I am considering getting Goodyear Eagle F1 GS-D3 they are very highly rated on Tirerack.com. However, I was wondering if any of you have ever used or tried these on your e36's. Would you recommend these tires? Does anyone have any experience with these tires on the track?
Thank you in advance!

I've had them on my M3 for a couple months. So far I'm pretty impressed, but I've only driven them on the street so it's hard to say just how good they are. My size is fairly expensive (245/35/18) and I have a set of dedicated track wheels & tires, so I don't plan to put them on track unless it's pretty wet.

They are one of the best wet and dry handling tires we have tested. By far the best Goodyear has ever put out.
If I can help let me know.

Hi Jim,
I would actualy like to take you up on your offer to help. Based on what I heard about these tires on DTM Power and Bimmerforums they are an outstanding high performance tire and would match my driving style. I would love to get these tires from you. Hovewer it seems they are on back order everywhere. Could you help me find them, sizes 245/35/17 all the way around.
Your help would be greatly appreciated.

I've had them since March '03. I've put about 7500 miles on them. A few days ago I gave the rears the penny test and still had about half of Lincoln's head left. However, as of late, the rears have been very slippery on launch with the traction breaking very easily under medium to hard acceleration. I have checked the tire pressure and it's normal. Although I have to admit, we've had a cold spell here in DC recently and pressure may have dropped considerably. Overall I'm happy with their wet and cornering traction, but the ease with which they lose traction upon launch has left me a bit gun shy about "enthusiastic" acceleration runs. I have also tried the Pilot Sports and the S03s. Overall all these tires are very comparable and unless you are running 9/10s on the track you won't experience much difference on the road (except for hydroplaning where the Goodyears are clearly superior).

Low tire pressure would improve traction if anything. Your problems are because of cold tires and cold roads most likely TransHuman. Grip in the cold is going to suck for any tire. While some might have a lower operating temp, I think it's pretty standard on most street tires for cars.

While I tend to agree with you about cold tires and reduced traction, my point is that of the three sets of tires I have had on this car (P-Sports, S03s, F1GSD3s) these exhibit the most dramatic effects of cold tire traction loss. BTW, I checked my pressure on a recent cold morning a few days ago and I was at 24psi on the rears..drastically low and in my opinion not enhancing traction at all. I quickly fixed that situation and I can say I've seen a marked improvement in the tires' inclination to slip at cold temps...it's still there but not as bad as before.

How do these good year tire sizes compare to the so3s?

What do you mean Mantic? You mean what sizes do they come in..or how they look compared to the same size S03? Honestly, if that's your question I can't really tell you..I don't pay much attention to their size appearance..perhaps the S03s have a larger sidewall. Footprint looks about the same I'd say. The shoulder was perhaps more square on the S03s.
