View Full Version : m60/2 how do we know? (not a nikisil question)

So last night i started thinking about the build potential for an m60, and every thing i've read. then i started think about what i haven't read; i read constantly about people claiming m62b44 heads, and s62 heads will fit on a m60 block. But how do we really know this? I have yet to actually read about somebody butchering together a hi-brid bmw v8.
So my question is; how does any body really know that some of these parts are interchangeable?
I realize that this engine isn't the most economic to build, but i'd like to keep this thread on topic, and have people discuss their first, or second hand experience with major building of the m60
Edit: i feel like a newb asking a question like this, but there aren't a lot of people open to talking about this engine. i just feel like i should know more about it than i do atm.
I'm interested
Did you try a Search of the forums ? There have been a few build threads which may contain answers.
I have a reasonably serviceable 540/6 with a bad engine. I'd like to think at some point It'll get a transplant of an M60 or M62..
For now I think I'm just going to transfer its registration to My new 540 and put a car cover over it..

Well, when the headgaskets are the same, we can make some educated guesses. Otherwise, wait until it's actually done. Seen this thread? (http://forums.bimmerforums.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1557876&highlight=cams)
I recall finding an obscure reference on a UK forum that somebody did, in fact, put M60 heads on an M62 block. I'll go dig that up...

I've been wondering the same, I have this stuff down to a science in the VW world, but my b40 has me wanting the possibilty for more.

i would forums search this stuff, but my search isn't working. i'm glad i'm not the only one perplexed by this. As fAr the head gaskets. m60, m62, and s62 all have a different bore.

well i'm glad to see that there is a lot of interest in such a build. i'm on my way out the door right now, and just wanted to see what kind of progress we had. Since there is so much interest in the build, i'm going to keep up on my person research, to keep the thread alive.
with that said, and my search function figured out :rolleyes, i'm going to leave you with this thread i found, to start stirring the pot.

While we pondering on this, lets post up some ideas for things we should anylize between the 3 blocks (m60, m62, s62). it would basically be questions to base our research on.
We also might want to think about starting a thread in the e39 forum, if we can search out answers out in the forum, on our own. i have a feeling there are some guys over there who know there stuff.

Please do. And wow. I was thinking about this myself recently and wondering why no-one here has put M60 heads on an M62 block yet. I know there have been a few M62 swaps done, and I know that there's a bit of converting necessary to make the M62 OBDI ready. But why hasn't anyone just bolted up the M60 heads and timing gear to a healthy M62 bottom end? The only thing I can come up with is that no-one has wanted to open a good M62, but I myself have no problem with that. I just need to wait a while to be in the right position to do the swap, which is why I haven't asked this question myself. I have a feeling that there won't be any real issue with swapping the heads, other than you'll need the proper M62 headgasket. And by doing the head swap you end up with what I'd call the perfect combo - the slightly higher lift M60 cams and the double chain timing set. FWIW this is what I plan on doing myself, but not for several months yet. I'll keep an eye in here though in the meantime. :D
Fox (big plans...big plans)
Edit: I also forgot about the M60's double valve springs - they're nice to have too. :D

Look at MacR, he has a full build thread, S62 crank modified to work in an M60. They are not as plug and play as it seems that you are looking for. These engines need fabrication to work in harmony. The work involved is not major, just has a potential to be a headache, and may have to test fit, take apart, test fit again, etc.

Haha, nice, I was wondering if that was you! He is working on it still, there was some weird stipulation with it, should have it back this week or next. Try calling him again.
Glad to hear you got the trans done!

yeah, it had some severely mared bell housing/starter bolts on it. i couldn't get the e-torx around them... but it's pretty good. probably gonna get a fresh coat of paint, in exchange for building a buddys small block.
Any way, after doing a little research, "MacR", that TJ pointed out, is actually the same car in the video i posted up. i'm gonna search for his build thread. dam mods sure post a lot.

That why he suggested you look for 'MacR'. :D He's pretty well known around here for that beast...
Fox (I can haz S62??!!??1!1one)
Edit: Also, look for 'BigM62'. He has a built M62, as his name would indicate. I believe he also went with the S62 crank option, so I bet there's some good info out there somewhere.
