Hi guys

Yesterday I had an accident driving my 2001 525i, a taxi crossed the avenue I was driving on and stayed in the middle of it because he didn't know which way to go and he didn't look before.. so I t-boned it...and my airbag deployed:shifty , also the left xenon headlight is broken, engine mount started leaking(it was new:shifty),hood is slightly bent and front bumper needs to be repainted, what other things do I need to replace ?

my thoughts:

-driver's airbag of course(anything else that is hidden?)
-Seat belt pyrotechnic tensioner?
-Something exploded around the battery that disconnected the cable that feeds the engine with voltage, everything else works, is this device replaceable? reusable?,I reconnected it and the engine started.

Thanks

There's a pyrotechnic device in the battery + cable, just like an airbag. If you look under Engine Electrical > Battery Cable in the parts catalog you will see the part listed there.

If you're trying to DIY airbag repair, you need a BMW-specific scantool. I strongly suggest you don't undertake this without at the very least obtaining and reading all the airbag information in BMW TIS.

Thanks, I will not be doing the repairs myself, my mechanic(who used to work at the BMW dealer) will do all the work, I just wanted to know what else would I need to buy in order to get everything as it left the factory

Sucks that happend but good to hear it wasn't worse.

The Taxi Co's insurance is paying for it, right? I would hope so!

You should replace the seat belt as well. That is standard practice any time there is an accident and the seat belt was worn.

There are the parts that are pretty much mandatory for replacement:
- airbag (obviously)
- crash sensors
- SDM (airbag control module) or reprogram the old one
- seat belts that were in use
- seat belt tensioners that were in use
- battery cable part

May be some other parts, but those are the basics for any airbag repair.

Good luck!

Thank you for this extremely useful information, I have ordered the rest of the parts that I needed to get airbag sign out.

The only question I have is the "- seat belts that were in use" doesn't have any sensors in them (as far as I know, I had replaced one and haven't seen any). How does the system recognizes it as an after an accident one? I have 07 530XI

Follow up question, I use NCS Expert (for coding), if I recode whole car "- SDM (airbag control module) or reprogram the old one" will reset as well?

Hi,

Please post this question in the E60 section as this is the E39 one.

The front seat belt tensioners have a pyrotechnic charge built into them that when in an accident, they explode to quickly tighten the seatbelts...then gently release to allow a controlled impact with the front airbags. The rear seatbelt tensioners I believe are only mechanical...thus should be okay. If you had passengers in either of the front seats & the airbags were deployed...you need to check each tensioner to see if it needs to be replaced due to activation of the explosives. See item #1 in the diagram below:

Yes, I have ordered the seat belt tensioner. My question is regarding ordering seat belt itself. Number 3-9 which ever it is on Diagram.

Dennis,

FYI NCS Expert is used an all types BMW even motorcycles. Seat belt structure is the same on all cars, not only BMW (all), might look different (not tensioner)

I once removed my Drivers door airbag without disconnecting the battery to fix the window and had an airbag light on. I ordered a BMW specific airbag code reader from China online for cheap. Took a couple weeks to show up but it shut the light off. And since I have used it several times in buddies cars and its always worked. Here is the link. For $23 you cant go wrong.

Stanley , When you say "Yes, I have ordered the seat belt tensioner. My question is............" Can you please tell me the part number you ordererd. I am having the same issue. I ordered a "Seat Belt Buckle Tensioner Driver Left " part number (72117213563). But it does not have the tensioner itelf, its just a regular buckle. Can I order a seat belt tensioner seperately part number (11288624196) and get it attached to the buckle I bought? Toatlly confused . please help !

Stanley hasn't posted in over two years. He may be long gone.

Fyi, it might be better to start your own post so we don't have to read through a 6 year old post that someone else wrote.
