E39'er's,
Anyone have any experience with Powdercoat-it in Sacramento? I'll give them a try for my M62TU Valve covers. $110 for the pair to bead blast and coat. Anyone have any experience with them?
I did post in the regional section, checking here as well.
Also, can anyone confirm what the original paint color was for the M62 Valve covers. Mine after 12 years are now a flaking faded gold, but I thought I read somewhere they were originally silver. Can anyone confirm either way?
Thanks! :cool

Yes, a silver color. Your paint is discolored. I selected a coating that was close to the color of my new (at the time) water pump.
Take a look at their work. They should have some samples to show you. If they've been in business for a good long time, they should be reliable. If they do a lot of motorcycle parts, they're probably okay (m-c people tend to be picky).
Don't have the insides done. Point out to them that the covers are magnesium.
You'll be very pleased with the result.
BTW, that's about half of what I paid several years ago.

On the contrary im not sure you should point out they are magnesium. It is too much of a risk for bead blasting shops to blast magnesium as it is highly flammable under some conditions and once magnesium ignites, you are SOL. As far as price, 110 is not bad, mine cost 160$ but i was very happy with the result. If it was san jose area i would recommend a shop. Also make sure to note not to coat any areas where screws go. Lastly, i'm not sure what you would prefer but i also had them not coat the underside of the covers in case it flaked off and fell in the valve / cam area.

They do motorcycle and custom motor work. He didn't have an issue with the magnesium covers and I'm only doing exterior on the covers, not inside or surface seal areas.
Silver color will work just fine. He mentioned that the turnaround is 3-5 days. I'll check out their samples. They would like to just bring them in with a base cleaning as a prep for the bead blasting. Best of all they are 5 miles from my house and open on Monday, so I don't have to rush today.
Thanks for your insight! :cool
