I have a May 2007 Bmw 328i with the USB ipod connectivity. We bought the car used and everything worked fine. The USB stopped working (when we would try to select it, it would say "error" below the USB selector on the radio display). After taking it to the dealership, they said they replaced the USB port and everything worked fine. Got it home and checked it, and it was still broken, but not just saying "error", it was saying "empty" under the USB icon on the display.
Took it to a DIFFERENT BMW dealership to have it fixed again, and they said it worked fine and sold me a $60 BMW "Y" cable that plugs into the iPod, and then on the other end has two plugs, one for USB and one for AUX jack. The dealership told me the cord fixed the problem and it worked fine. I then noticed that the music was not coming in through the USB, becausee none of my playlists etc were showing up on my display.
So I took it to the dealership again last week, and they said they ended up replacing the plug again, and now the USB and the AUX have to be plugged in at the same time using that "y" cable, and my white ipod cord that came with the phone still does not work. I do not like using the BMW cord because it is only about 10 inches long and it is inconvienent to use while driving, and it is too short to hand over to the passenger.
Has anyone else had this problem? I just do not understand why TWO BMW dealerships could not fix it, and ALL I WANT IS FOR IT TO WORK CORRECTLY LIKE IT USED TO!!!!\

does anyone have any pointers???

You cannot use the Apple cable to get iPhone integration, you MUST use the Y cable and have both USB and aux connected. So in short your car is now fine. Leave the iPhone in the compartment, no need to have it out if you have BT.

^^^ as said above (and probably countless times on this forum)- I don't think it was ever really broken. To use an iPhone/iPod you must use the adapter and the USB and audio jack must be plugged in. USB is data and aux is audio. Unless your playing your music off a thumb drive, then all you need is the USB.

thanks for the feedback, but my concern was that when we first got the car, it worked fine with the white ipod cord and now it doesnt....i just do not understand why it worked before, and now it doesnt. i guess i will just have to get used to it.
