Front Crank Seal...How hard is this job? What would I need to take apart to get to it? I have an extensive tool set and Ive done the job on domestic cars/trucks but not on a BMW. Should I leave it to the dealer or equivelent?

Not sure about the difficulty about the job, but check your harmonic damper. The only times I've had crank seal problems on cars was from a bad balancer.

Ok, will take a closer look. I cant determine exactly where the oil leak is coming from but it looked a little wetter around the crank seal are.... I guess it could be coming from higher above though. (fingers crossed) :(

The only thing hard about it is getting the bolt out to remove the hub, it's known as the Jesus bolt. Guess why?

Do a search here there is lots of info on it.

It's not hard at all once the harmonic balancer is off.

You need a tool to pull the old seal off and reinstall the new one. I had the same problem and took the opportunity to replace the chain guides at the same time. Just took the cover off and brought it to a shop to have the new seal installed.
