I'm looking to change the exhaust note on my 335i. However, I don't feel like spending $1,400 on a full exhaust system. I was looking at Magnaflow and Borla mufflers. Anyone have opinions on this? I just don't it to sound like a fart can. I would like to have that "deep growl". Also, if new mufflers are a good choice, would it be possible to only buy one muffler and just use the stock tips?

My bro has a borla system on his subaru legacy gt and it sounds great. It has a nice smooth deep tone (not fart-can obnoxious) and sounds great when opened up. You could get a custom exhaust shop to replace mufflers if all you care about is sound. As far as using stock tips I doubt it because they will most likely not fit the new mufflers.

Replace only one muffler?

So yeah why only one muffler, I hear the 335i comes with two, lol?

I was thinking since it's more for sound, one would suffice.

The size of the tips would be different and it would look awkward. if you are going to do it, do it right.

There are tons of choices out there. My suggestion would be to listen to each one either on youtube or if there is a meet by your area, go check it out and see which one you like. Once you get a couple options look around. There are always ones for sale for a decent price. I had my rdsport and enjoyed it.

I'm looking for just mufflers.

If you are just looking for better exhaust tone, do the golf tee mod. I do mine with a zip tie and a vacuum line cap. Under $1! Just replacing the mufflers won't really give you a significant power increase... turbo back, would however.

If you insist on a much louder exhaust for a more affordable price, you could have two magnaflows put on it place of the stock mufflers. Probably around $600.

I already have the Golf-Tee done. Also the magnaflow mufflers are about $175 each.

Even with the windows rolled up and the logic 7 on, I can hear my exhaust and sounds great to me. I've always been scared to put anything else on it, stock is engineered pretty good. I have read the 335i stock exhaust is the best sounding on any BMW including the M cars. I don't hear many M cars though so not sure about that.

I agree, stock does sound pretty good especially when you get on it. That's why I'm hesitant.

If I were going with just mufflers, I would use Borla or Corsa. The sound is hard to beat

which model of those mufflers though?

Im used to V8s so I want to be picky about a 6cyl and not get a ricer sound

Billy Boat makes a great sounding set up for the 335i, we ran it on ours for a quite a while. Below is a video with some audio clips.

Mattman,
I am curious to hear how your journey resolved! Many of us have that thought, "What a tragic shame BMW built that beautiful motor, then muffled the crap out of it. I WANT to hear it in all its glory!" The 2 truths in play here are:
1) Beauty is in the ear of the beholder. The "best" sounding exhaust is the one YOU think sounds best. One cannot ask others. And...
2) Your exhaust note is a result, the sum of many components. That is, a free flow exhaust tip does little without free flowing mufflers, cats or cat deletes, downpipes, headers, et cetera, all the way forward to a free flow air intake. Just replacing 1 part of the system will cost money and disappoint.
I agree with CPI below, that it's worth going to a meet and taking notes. You have to pay to play.
