The heater valve that's mounted to the firewall on the drivers side seems to be leaking. Is it worth the trouble to replace it with a used unit or is new the only way to go?
The hoses seem fine and the coolant leak is up in underneath so I'm hoping to get away with just the control valve.
Does $175 sound about right for this part or can a good one be had for less?
Thanks
Eric

$175 is way to much for a control vavle. Check Autohausaz.com or pelicanparts.com. If my memory serves me correct, it"s like $120 from one of these places.
My was leaking too. It was coming from the Aux. water pump motor housing though. It is located directly under the control valves and comes off with the valves. I picked a used one up for $30 at the salvage yard(for both the control valve and aux water pump). Works fine and doesn't leak. Plus they gave me a 30 day guarantee on it. Or you can search on here, people sell these all the time when the are parting out their cars. But if you want peace of mind go with a new one. IF you do decide to go new make sure that you're replacing the correct leaking part because the aux water pump is an additional $140 new. Also the only thing that sucks about this repair is bleeding the coolant system and getting the old hoses off.
Hope this helps,
GOOD LUCK!

Mine is a 95 530iT. What other years and models had the same valve and six water pump?
I'm going to try a few yards before I go to BMA.
Thanks

It's almost never the heater valve that leaks. It is the aux water pump attached to the heater valve unit that leaks.
You could just bypass the aux pump like I did.. I don't even notice the difference.
Also, if it really does happen to be the water valve, there are many models that use the same valve.

It was the pump
RePlaced it with a piece of angle hose nipple
