My 95 540/6 is a Canadian Version 9/95 prod date

TYPICAL: Start the car and the headlights come on without touching the
switch...Center position on the switch keeps the lights on even if you turn the vehicle off.

QUESTION 1... What it the upper position for? If I move the headlight switch full up, i notice no difference except when i shut the car off it DOES NOT SHUT OFF until I move the headlight switch to off ! Normal ??

QUESTION 2... High beams are activated by pulling back of the turn signal stalk, but they shut off when you release the stalk. Is there a position to KEEP them on ??

Noob questions? lol

Thanks

Don't canadian cars all have DRL?

Just a guess, they did not make a new headlight switch for cars with DRL's.
Push the stalk forward to leave highbeams on.

The headlight and highbeam issues are clearly evidence your car is broken beyond hope of repair. Fortunately, today is your lucky day! I'll trade you my perfectly-running 525 for it!

Kidding. In all seriousness, what the guys above me said.

On a related note, I guess you Canucks can't enjoy the wonderful E34 feature of being able to drive around with just your running lights and foglights on? Love that.

Got beaten to the punch. You can swap the lkm with a european model to eliminate the drls. I just leave mu switch on all the time because the ights switch off as soon as the car is off anyways. Then I use the fogs when I feel like it.

BEN... To my knowledge yes they all have DRL. Did you catch the part about my car not shutting off if the switch is in the top position?

Porsche... Hmmm! Can't believe I didn't try "push forward" lol

Bold... Funny "Some say" lol and on a related note; I can wash my headlights :-)

Cornflakecwl... Do you know Oakville, Ont? Yup I'm Cdn too but, what is "mu switch"?
Lol I'll look into the LKM swap

I'm on the Cape... Wife is American...Oh Joy!
Thanks everyone :-)

So you're saying the engine continues to run if you leave the headlight switch on?

If I leave the headlight switch all the way UP, yes!

So let's get this straight: You leave the headlight switch in the "up" position, turn the ignition key to the off position and remove it from the car, and the car stays running? And in that state, should you push the headlight switch to the "down" position, the car stops?

If so, what in the world? :confused

Something isn't right there... I swapped mine a while ago so I'm trying to recall the old behavior. There should be no difference in behavior between the switch in the headlight on position and the full off position. The headlights and parking lights come on when the car is started and go off when you turn it off. Putting the switch in the parking light position will allow the parking lights to stay on with the car off, but the headlights still come on when the car is running.

CDN cct on the left, US on the right. Note that the Yellow wire connects before the switch on cdn cars. This is the headlight control signal for the LKM.

Am I correct?
Down= Off Symbol: Daytime Running Lights, Fogs dont work with that position.

Middle= Park Lights Symbol:...Headlights and park lights come on even if the car is off, dont go off when car is shut off. Foglamps work in this position.

Top= Headlight Symbol: Seems to do exactly as "Middle"

* Today the car wont shut off in the "MIDDLE" position but will in the "DOWN" or "TOP" position!
* I am having flashbacks of possibly having swapped the LKM for the one in my parts car..91 525iA I think i best check that first off!

Sherman...thanks for the input...doesnt look like im out of the woods yet! lol

Right, fogs will work with switch in parking or on, not off. In the top position (on), everything should turn off with the car off. Should behave like the off position only allow fogs to work.

No problem. Spent quite a while pouring over these diagrams and pulling the interior apart getting rid of DRLs and installing the rear fog.

Some of them had external relays post lkm iirc. Suggest looking for those pos and ditching them. That should cure your cross feed from headlight to ignition problem.
