No really, don't hold back; we're big boys (and girl)—we can take it. :D
What other car-related forums do you contribute to? How do they compare to BF.C E34? More active? Less active? More friendly? Technical? Serious? Dish.
As for me, I'm currently active on here, zcar.com and occasionally nceuro.org. In the past, I've been on supraforums.com, msccnc.org, audiworld.com, bigcoupe.com, turbobricks.com and (way back) the first-gen RX-7 e-mail list. I have a few posts on mpvclub.com, but nothing "social" like the other lists—purely maintenance/repair-related questions.
My favorite was the first-gen RX-7 list. Moderately (but not overwhelmingly) active. Great, helpful guys. I dunno how eager I would have been to tackle my first engine swap without. The community makes a difference, for sure.

Was on acuraworld a lot when I had my TL. Haven't been on much since I got rid of it. Don't have THAT much time for forums, I spend way too much time on here as it is at work! LOL

There are OTHER forums? No way.

I have been on other car forums (VW and Jaguar) for friends and relatives. Compared to BF.C they are ghost towns. There is very little info in comparison and no social aspect at all. I have been on one non-car forum (PeterCetera.com) and it was pretty active but eventually it got very repetitive and I lost interest (even more so than threads about AE's and CAI's on here).
This is without a doubt the best forum I have seen.

I am on a good many, read a lot, don't post much on most. Clubtouareg, good forum for a car specific. Vwvortex forum has too much depth and is a pain to navigate and does have some good info. Also on local forums like tristatetuners and patuned just to keep in touch with the young kids and local stuff. Svtperformance is probably the best entertainment value ever for a forum and has a wide spectrum of 'exclusive' or crazy fast cars, and good info also.

vwvortex.com was a great place when I had my VWs a few years back.
I'm on a local BC-based forum as well (bcbimmers.com) - it's slow, but it's a good place to meet other local owners and arrange meetups and fun drives up into the mountains.
M5board and bfc and a local forum too. Bfc e34 is not nearly as technical as m5board. But if i am looking for lulz i come here.

Was on tahoeyukonforum for a while, but not active anymore for obvious reasons.
Decent place reminds me of Bfc e34 when it was just getting started.

I came here from honda-tech.com. It has a lot more members on the car I was driving (integra gsr) so a lot more posts. i.e. dialing in cam gears, running an external coil, and other mod stuff. But the quality of the average post here is MUCH higher (grammar, syntax, background info). The 'good' information on that site is pure gold though (much like our DIY section).
It just seems that the interest in cars/community is there (honda-tech) but I often felt like any 16 year old would buy a civic and ask about bolt-on's, were as here it seems that most people are 'serous' about their bimmers. I'm not sure of the average age on this site (I'm 23) but it seems more like I'm talking to adults when I post, not some kid who wants to turbo his 95hp civic.
I really like this site, and I appreciate the members. It just seems like there's just more mutual respect here.

I came here from turbododge.com, which is all about 80s Chryslers with 2.2/2.5 turbo engines. I used to own a Dodge Omni GLH before I got back into BMWs. That site is a treasure trove for anyone with those vehicles. The community is very active and, surprisingly for cheap old econoboxes, there is a lot of aftermarket stuff available for them.
Unlike BFC.e34, the people there are extremely helpful to newbies and very encouraging of outrageous and ridiculous modifications (seriously, why put down someone who wants to mate a T56 to his M60???). I've never understood the pretentiousness of this forum but there is definitely a lot of helpful information here. BFC.e34 is nowhere near as fun as turbododge.com, but I like the cars way better!

Did you know Getrag made a six speed for that engine? maybe that's why. (example)
But I totally understand the 'outrageous and ridiculous modification' part I didn't buy my e34 for anything other than fun, but it's sad quickly I'd get flamed for for asking about running wet nitrous in my m60. On the flip side, I bet no one would flame it if it was all ready finished and raping m5's. (DIY coming this summer)

vwvortex.com was a great place when I had my VWs a few years back.
I tried the Audi subsection of VWVortex when I had my 4000 quattro, hated it. Part of it was probably the fact that that part of the forum was pretty dead, but the site layout was clunky and unwieldy.

I've never visited, but I have a mental image of that site as three or four mature, knowledgeable adults pulling their hair out over hundreds of 16-year-old ricers asking the same questions every day. Or maybe they do it for fun, like shooting fish in a barrel. The knowledge gap between "haves" and "have-nots" seems like it would be greater.

Isn't it interesting how the helpfulness / civility of the average enthusiast seems to be inversely proportional to the coolness of a particular car? Generally speaking, the older / more dorky a car is to the average non-enthusiast, the "better" said car's owners are about newcomers, etc.

Besides here I spend time at the M5board, bimmernut, & the local CCA board. The M5board is a lot more technical. Bimmernut is fairly technical as well and a bit more serious than here. And the local CCA board is mostly 3 series owners, particularly E30's.
None of those boards are as active as this one. And this place is especially good for parts as there's a lot of you guys that part cars & do yard runs. I mostly spend time around here for parts buying so I don't stop by that often. Probably should stop by more often as I missed out on a local sale of the perfect diff for my car. :(

Agree with all of this^. I poked around that forum while I was contemplating a turbo Caravan :evil2 for the wife's DD. Those guys are dedicated enthusiasts and some are just nuts, in a good way.

And girl. :)
haha.
I'm on Landroverforums.com, as well. They are MUCH less active than BF.com, and because there are only a few people in their sub-forums, the information is half of what we have. (you guys are great)
Other than that, though, there is some good stuff on there (however scarce) and the people are usually right to the point.
OH, and they really like pictures. (not that we would know anything about that)

Land Rover Forums Discovery 1 section is bumping. I always have an answer pretty timely.
Before I came to BF.c when I got my E30, I was an active member of Club4AG. Awesome site except for all the Initial D Fan Boys who would come on and be like WTB: AE86 HATCH black/white Panda Style. It was annoying but then the fad died just after I got out and made bank selling all of my AE86s :rofl
But I poke around on the local forum and the Isuzu forum once in a while.

honda-tech, very rarely, I still go on there to visit the welding/engine management sections, my brother has a high HP integra, so I got to keep myself updated on stuff like that since I'm doing most of the electrical/computer shit on his car. The welding section is also nice since a lot of nice fabricators are on there, if anyone is interested in seeing one of the best welders I have seen in my life, go to honda-tech.com, welding/fabrication, and find "recent exhaust work" posted by 9bells, he does a lot of different manufacturer cars with 120% satisfaction.
I'm mainly on here reading and learning new things everyday, mainly the e34 section but the generals/diagnostic/forced induction a few more are my favorites.

Did you know Getrag made a six speed for that engine? maybe that's why. (example)
no, it was the 'less expensively than a used getrag' + the gear ratios being completely wrong that coffin-nailed that one, no flaming ever occured...
and even the op said it was a bad idea once he was educated on it.
Why do certain people hold grudges over stuff like that?
Ie giving helpfully DISCOURAGING information, instead of just fanboy'ing every single idea that pops up?
That is a GOOD thing.

I'm on the Alfa Romeo forum (Alfabb) and was on the Alfa Digest back when it was an email list.
Great group, extremely polite, some super knowledgeable. Small tight-knit community. Mostly focused on restoration and maintenance, less on mods. There is little aftermarket support for Alfa's in the US but it's there if you know where to look.
I find this community to be similar, but more mod focused and much younger. The average Alfa owner is now 40+, vs. mid 20' here. Makes me feel old, but I'm glad to be giving back finally after all the years of learning.
Now if y'all young whipper-snappers would just listen. No you can't make your M20 as fast as an M60 for $1k, just go buy a damn 540i and be done with it already!

Reminds me of the E24 guys. Some modding, but mostly focused on restoration. The newbies who suggest "non-period-correct appearance alteration" get run out on a rail! ;)

I was a VWVortex member for a year plus. Large community, and I would say is comparable to the ratio of Mods vs DYI vs Maintenance. Eh, maybe more modding than maint, but there was still some good info there (Most of the newer models are all mods. You have to get into the MKIV's to really get good maint. And their R32 subforum is awesome. Super tight knit, highly organized, tons of into). Not into slammed VW's though, I was on the OEM+ kit (pretty much same here).
I'd go back if I were to ever get a VW again. I check in every now and then as my mom is rocking a diesel jetta sportwagon.

Why would we flame you? There are a few points to consider, but I think you'd be reasonably supported if you knew WHY you wanted to do it and it was a good reason. Done right nitrous isn't all bad, and the M60 can obviously handle a bit more power as it can take to supercharging pretty well. Just remember though, if you get caught with nitrous in a car on the street they impound your car (everywhere I've been recently). So for street use even I'd try to talk you out of it, but for track use, I'd say go for it. But remember the ultimate rule - bottles are for babies!!! :stickoutt
Fox (FI ftw)
As for an 'outrageous or ridiculous mod', I'm still waiting for someone to set up a whipple on an M60. I can't tackle it yet (maybe/probably not for a long while), but it needs doing dammit!! Who's gonna step up for this one??!?

I'm on Cadillacforums, but rarely post anything. The sections are broken down by model only, with no sub-sections for specific generations. Really a pain when i was searching for things related to my '90 Seville and i had to weed through posts for all years.
Oh and then there was the guy who had a thread stickied that was trying to do a turbo build on a 91 Seville using a turbo from a GM 6.5 diesel.
