I have the "screw on" type of oil filter housing for my '94 530i, my question is do i need to buy an oil filter remover adapter where you wrap it around the top part and spin it off? Such as:

or do i need to unscrew the bolt on top? (Which does not seem possible but am willing to ask!)

Thanks guys, sorry for the ignorance. By the way, which specific size tool am i supposed to get?

I dont know it seems big, use an ajustable wrench. its so big you wont have any difficulty getting it out.

36mm socket @ sears is cheaper than an adjustable wrench that's big enough

Adjustable wrenches are the worst tool you can buy. They strip everything and should only be used when you absolutely have to.

Get the proper socket. Even if it's from Harbor Freight. Won't strip the nut/bolt.....nearly as bad.

Well i ended up returning the adjustable wrench because it wasnt big enough...

I think ill just go get the socket tomorrow.

On a nut THAT big, can't strip that with an ajustable wrench. When it comes to weird size big bolt an ajustable wrench is very usefull. a socket would be best yes, but it will only be used for this while the wrench can be used for plenty other things. they suck for bolt under 12mm or so. Otherwise its all good for bolt that arent torque like crazy. Just like this oil filter housing bolt. Adjustable wrench can get you out of trouble. It's not a great tool to work with and it suck, but i've used it many times anyway with off-size bolts. When I go to the yard I won't carry my 36mm socket around but I do carry my adjustable wrench.

Just my 2 cents. If you are to get into serious wrenching, that tool is a must.
