all I've heard is that the awd system robs a lot of power and adds a lot of weight.

yeah it does rob alot of power and add alot of weight just like every other awd system on the market. aside from quattro its one of the best systems on the market. its still delivers more power to the rear wheels which is always better and doesnt offer too much of that awd lag or push when your coastin.

Why do you laugh? That sounds about right. To upgrade to xenons on the E46 you need new housings on top of bulbs... very expencive.

There was an E30 all-wheel drive.

dude...I bet, actually I'm 99.9999% sure those "upgrades" were ordered w/ the car. And theres no way that the xenons were $1200! I think in '01 (pre bi-xenon) the xenon upgrade was something like $5 or 600. They just upped the prices on all the "upgrades" to make the car look like a better deal.

Hell yeah, the 3 series xi has been around for a bit. When I was shopping for a bimmer, I was eyeballin a 87 325ix. The guy was overly high on meds or something as his asking price was out of this world.

i have one as you can see. its great in snow. i was blowing by people stuck everywhere last time we had a semi-major snowstorm. however performance wise it doesnt live up to bmw expectations. it handles just okay. you cant gun it in turns like with the rwd. a lot of the power is robbed especially with an automatic. id say its great for a woman. but id rather get a cheap awd car and have gotten a 330ci or 330i with pp

I had an 87 325ix for 180k miles. Car was unstoppable with snow tires! I miss that car so much. At times I even used in drivers schools back in 1990-92 when I was a student. It is a great system that worked flawlessly except needing front axles at 160k. With a bigger rear swaybar it even drove similar to a rear only drive car. At the time I had a E30 M3 and the ix. When I needed cash to buy a house I had to sell a car so the M3 went away and I kept the ix. Ok, enough rambling.........
Living in the NE and the beautiful wonderous snow belt, I'd have loved to have picked up an ix, but the deal I got on my 325is was too good to pass up.

If I buy another E30, it's going to be a 325ix. Good old mechanical clutches.
If I'm going to drive a BMW through the snow and salt etc, it's not going to be a brand new one. I would spend the premium on getting the performance package.

yeah, I would definitely rather have an ix around here (northern NY), any bimmer is still fast enough for me and awd would have saved my ass many times.

I have an '89 325iX also and it is pretty awesome in the snow, etc. I'd even say that it's better in the snow than my '90 Toyota 4Runner was. Put snowtires on it and it's downright unstoppable in the snow. Oh and the proper term for it is AWD instead of 4WD. A 4WD system distributes the power evenly to the front and rear...an AWD system has a different balance of power between the front and rear. The E30 iX system sends 33% to the front and 67% to the rear. This results in a car that feels more like a rear wheel drive car in day to day driving, but has the grip of AWD in inclement conditions. Pure genious IMHO.
Unfortunately, the older iX's are not without their share of problems. The system isn't bulletproof and is somewhat finicky and the viscous coupler is known to be a weak point. Comparatively, I have no idea how the new Xi's are. They look nice, but I think i'd rather drive the E30 iX in the snow...

Really the difference between AWD and 4WD is the ability to go from 4WD to 2WD a AWD vehicle is always turning all four wheels where a 4WD truck or SUV can be switched from all 4 wheels powered to only 2 using the transfer case.

If you want AWD...why get a BMW...bimmers are known for their insane torque and rear wheel drive i think theres a reason they dont make more AWD bimmers......get an audi or volvo for AWD...or hell just get a big fckin truck
