I bought the car about 6 mos ago and I love it but the clutch seemed a bit odd when I first got it, now it has slipped considerably, and I am in the Keys and reputation has it that I may have difficulty finding a competent repair shop - it's looking like a NAPA-associated mechanic. I was wondering if it could be adjusted or does it most likely mean a new clutch? From what I've read so far, this may be a common problem, and needs to be replaced often. I am pushing 90K on the mileage. Anyone have the word on this? thanks,

You can try to bleed the slave cylinder in case the fluid is old or has gotten air in it.

If its been slipping for a while, even if there is still some clutch material left, its probably glazed and damaged now anyway from the slippage. Fortunately, a clutch job should be a fairly easy repair for any good mechanic, its virtually the same on every car.

Any BMW dealers or import specialty shops around you? I'd try to find one of those first.

It's pretty common for clutches to be worn out on M5's every 50-70k miles

M5's are known to eat clutches. My co-worker's M5 was slipping during hard acceleration at a mere 50k.

Chris1953,

You are in Long Beach CA.
My cousin owns an indy shop in Gardena CA just a few miles from you.
He is the BMW guru, honest and the price is probably the lowest in S. California.
These guys know their bimmers like the back of their hands.

I think the clutch is self adjusting. You are lucky to get that far if it is indeed the original clutch. When I did my clutch job a month ago, the disk was down to the rivets. It was at a point where I could not rev past 3K without slippage.

Clutch is probably gone. Not externally adjustable. If it's been slipping for a while you might as well plan on a flywheel also.
