It is like rowing a boat with a LONG rubber oar. :mad You need to drive a car with a 'real' shifter. I've driven Miatas for 12 years and IMO they have one of the best shifters available. (IMO it is better than my Ferrari 328) I added a short throw short shifter to my '97 and I guarantee you can duct tape my forearm to the console and I can run the gears with just the motion of my wrist.;)

I guess the shifter "problem" is a frame-of-reference issue.
Ever drive a Roadrunner with a pistol grip Hurst shifter?
I think the stock throws in the 530i are fine as my days of "banging gears" is long past. I suppose one of those uber-short shifters might come in handy if you track your car or are used to minimal shifter travel but the stock setup does what its supposed to do just fine. I plan to replace all of the worn plastic bushings in mine to restore that "like new" feeling as they do get a bit sloppy with age.
Oh and the CDV delete is a win for sure.

Ha! Nobody knows what a sloppy, long throw shifter feels like 'till you drive one of these. And it even has a short shift kit in it.
My 540 feels like a downright race car in comparison. It does have a Dinan shifter though.

I agree. Mine's *really* worn and I still don't see a problem. Proper shift technique + not beating the crap out of the car means it's a non-issue. I disliked the few cars I drove with short shifters. I guess it comes down to personal preference.

I run RL MTL, and I tried the E60 shift lever. Too stiff. Went with the E39 M5 lever. Very satisfied.

Loving the cdv delete. Did it when I put a new clutch/flywheel/e60 shifter and all accopanying bushings/bearings. No more slop and super accurate engagement.

Technically speaking, the lock valve "delays" the clutch engagement at a set rate which is not necessarily the same rate as your foot. I'm guess the folks at BMW felt the need to eliminate the possibility of "dumping" the clutch and accelerating wear on the transmission, giubo, third member, CV joints, etc...
I got used to it being in there but you really have to soft-shift your car and match revs precisely or you're certain to feel an embarrassing jerk. Without it, shifting precisely and quickly is a breeze as well as a pleasure.
Banish the CDV and feel the love.

It's basically a 1 way valve connected to the slave cylinder. Doesn't matter how fast you release the clutch, the valve will release it it's own pace.

LOL. My car feels great, especially considering this was the first car I drove with a stick.

If by bypass you mean remove, then yes.

so you just take it out, screw in the line inside the slave cylinder and thats all? do i need to bleed the system also?

If you manage to clamp or block the lines you don't need to bleed it afterwards. Some recommend it, but it's not really necessary unless you make a mess in the process.

Getting rid of mine soon. I also have by E60 shifter and royal purple. All I need now is a nice day here in NJ and the confidence for a DIY morning.
