El Paso is a pretty long trip but I'm sure once I get out there, I will make the drive man.

My wife and I are looking at homes in Austin everyday online. Probably buying in the next couple of months.

OK well we are not in the same financial situation as you so I say you look at houses with big in law suites since I'll be amazed if we even have a place lined up when we get out there, lol.

Oh yeah. A pool for sure..... in law suit might be cramped... but the door is open
You will probably be there before us. Are you going for work? I found one BMW shop. Black forest. they are a member of bimrs.org Really good work if you needed a shop for those hard jobs..

No, not for work. She'll have a job there. Fact is I can't find a decent one here and have no need to stay here.
Weather is playing a huge factor in this decision as well.
Austin's economy is alot stronger than ours. I'm hoping to make a fresh start so I can care for my kids instead of everything falling down on the wife.

Check out Ft. Worth.
You can allot of house for cheap.
I lived in San Antonio ( Live Oak ) for a year back in '90/'91. When we could we cooled off at the Guadelupe River. There are a few places where you can park and recreate. The Guadelupe River State Park was one. I had a about a square acre to mow on a riding lawn mower and was usually able to finish it with out breaks or falling unconscious with heat stroke even when it was 112 F. I couldn't stay however and headed for the Central California Coast aka Santa Cruz.. don't even bother looking at Real Estate there now,lol...

Yeah I'm open to anywhere in that area. Will need to find a place that's credit friendly to say the least as the economy dragged me under like a mobster tied a concrete block to my ankles.
Not very many places like that around here and the job search here is ridiculous without some fake breasts and the ability to dance.

Went to school for a couple years down there. Parents also live out in that direction. Now I am finishing up school in crappy ass Lubbock. Austin is an awesome area, much different than DFW. Sure do miss Austin though...

Austin is a great place, but it's ridiculously expensive to live there compared to the rest of the state. If you're moving for economical reasons, it's the wrong place to go.

I love Austin. If the right offer came along, I would be there in a heartbeat. I don't think the cost of living is all that different from other other metro areas in Texas. Jobs are a little harder to come by, at least in my field. In '08, I got one offer in Austin for 50% less than my multiple offers in DFW.
Great city, tough job market - its full of college grads who dont want to leave. SA is an option in hill country. Learn spanish. DFW is full of jobs, but lacks identity. Lots to do, but people just have an overall indifference to things here.
If it's Austin or bust, stay west of 35.

Austin peep, here.
Summers can be rough, but the winters are awesome. Case in point... it's going to be ~70 degrees today, not a cloud in the sky.
Real estate wise there is something for every budget. $100K (semi-ghetto) to $Xmil (lake front).
Like you said, I think it's weathered the economy pretty well, but it's not like there are jobs falling off trees. What line of work are you in?

This is my point exactly. $40k will buy a hell of a house in some places in TX. Not much to do there probably, but hey if you're broke you can't do anything anyway.

We can't buy a tent for $100k here. Are you kiddin?
I've always been in the credit card business and it was huge in Delaware due to relaxed banking regulations. Well that career field is officially gone.
I also went to a trade school for auto body and paint but NO place wants to hire less than an A tech.
Hopefully, I can somehow weasel my way into autobody, cause right now I'm still pissed off about paying tuition for nada.

Not sure about Austin, but in DFW you could find a small 3/2/2 ranch in the low $100k's in a clean neighborhood in the outer suburbs.
$40k? Sure, you might find something with walls, a roof, dead hooker in the tub and a meth lab out in the shed. Bullet holes cost extra though.

Dead hooker = some form of entertainment
Meth lab = instant income with no start up costs

Just to make my point with a $10,000 margin, here's one from a town I used to live near. I know the area very well and can assure you there are no bullets flying around the neighborhood.

Dude... that's the middle of nowhere. There is "middle-of-nowhere" available all over the country, he doesn't have to come to Texas for it. :stickoutt

Actually, there is no middle of nowhere here. Just everything packed up liked sardines.
Either way, we are thinking of going there for a fresh start. Buying real estate would of course be a goal, but not for probably a good 10 years so no need for you guys to argue over it.

Wow. That's cheap. I had to google Hubbard. My comment was only referring to DFW.

Honestly I don't think I can handle the cold and snow like they get. That plus the job market is not good. There is also less to do there than there is here and that's saying something. Hell, you probably can't even find a trunk hooker in that town.
If I'm going to make a fresh start somewhere, why bother going somewhere that I will end up hating and end up back in this craphole of a mess?
I also can't stand having only a few months out of the year to work on my car without freezing my arse off. I mean seriously, it has taken me 3 months to refinish a set of wheels cause I can only paint when it's warm enough and not raining, ridiculous.

Dude, go to Austin. The majority of the population is in our age bracket, I hear the live music scene there is incredible... damn. I'm talking myself into moving to Austin. I'm going in September for Austin City Limits (huge music festival) to check things out. I miss living in TX... I loved Corpus Christi.

Best time in the world to be here is October...and right now is pretty noich.
Austin, the little town with the big guest list.

I'm a broker in Waco (an hour north of Austin, and hour south of Dallas/Ft. Worth).
Real Estate is cheap, but Texas leaves a lot to be desired in my opinion.

Delaware leaves alot more to be desired, trust me and anyone else that has been here that feels like chiming in.
Are you saying that you are the man to contact when I am ready to go and looking for housing?

Depending on the area, I could be. Most likely, I can help you find someone who knows what they're doing.
Most realtors are completely worthless. Finding a good one is very difficult.

I recently moved to the Austin area from the San Francisco Bay Area. Austin is having growing pains and the most evident one is the commute traffic; it totally sucks. Housing here is pretty cheap when compared to where I came from. There are new housing developments popping up everywhere. A brand new median home about 15 miles North of Downtown starts at 275k. It gets cheaper the further out of course.
I'm currently renting in suburb north of Austin proper; Pflugerville 15 miles North of Downtown. I like it a lot in this area; very much like CA. I just spent my first summer here. I'll be honest, I wasn't a fan of the heat. I was told this was a mild summer. At peak I believe there was 3 weeks of 100 degree temps and we aren't even mentioning the humidity. I'm still not sold on staying here permanently just yet; I'll give it one additional year. Good luck on your wherever you land.
BTW: Here is a good local Realtor that I've worked with. She can get you hooked up on a daily listing of Austin area homes for sale, like she did for me:

I've only visited but was impressed with what I saw. Any capitol city will usually be more cosmopolitan than the rest of the state, add a university and you'll have lots of smart, energetic people. Austin seemed less in your face "Texas" than other places I've visited in the state. Lots of yankee expats there, maybe even be a democrat or two.
