I finally (too late) had a section of rust dealt with. It began below the glass in my right quarter panel. I decided to give it a litte grind a few weeks ago and watched a piece fall through. It had perforated. YAH!!! Swiftly to my local guys to do it right and the also gave me an idea about overall paint cost.

I got some work done today trimming for paint. Getting to know her nose a little.

Dual roofs fully functional
and I'm of the practice, "If it ain't broke..."
so I figured the way to pull the headliner sections of it (with the flaky fack-fabric thats left)
and now I also have full access to pull the main pieces for easy painting. :buttrock

lol 5 years and almost 8k posts means you're no noob, nice try. Are you going to shoot the whole car? Doing the engine bay too? If you're leaving the bay alone I'd just spray it in the same color it is now, it will be the best bang for the buck and silver looks good.
Btw that thing needs a man pedal almost as much as it needs new paint. How much did you score it for?
milKt
02-27-2011, 08:09 PM
yes,
spraying all panels (save the door jambs, engine bay, etc);
hence, why I was hoping that a few here have sprayed a slight shade off and not been too noticeable.
The dirty Sterling that is left in the bay and the door jambs will not represent any color well,
so if I go a shade darker or a shade light, it could be very acceptable.
Maybe I have never seen a good quality Sterling Silver paint job
as the clear on mine is beat to crabs ALL OVER.
Maybe I want something different.
Maybe a lighter shade of Granite Silver could kill a$$?
Concerning the man shifter,

May as well leave the rails off and fill the holes.

Yeah, I'd consider fixing the whole thing, but here's what I'd do. Since the doors come off so easily, and you can tuck the wiring into the pillars, and if you remove the door trim there's a VERY nice pinch weld in the jam to tape off... just do the jams all on one day and prep the rest of the car for a full reshoot. If you stay silver of any shade, the engine bay won't be a real issue anymore, just clean it up and be done with it. I'd even consider pulling the doors like I said and the fenders, and bumpers, and shooting it all that way. You'll be able to prep it yourself easily, and mask it off better too, and have a better result overall.
What suspension is that on, it looks pretty damn good.

The door harnesses? Go have a look at where they go from the body to the door, they disconnect and you can very easily tape the area off to paint. That's all I meant. Trust me, DIY paint prep is far more cost effective than you'd think, and you'll have a much better job when done.

If I'm gong for door jambs, then the gate will need to come off too.
and yes,
the jambs could be taped off at the lip where the weatherstrips slips onto.
Or course I still need to do the harnesses in the rear, so more real world motivation for this girl. :( I am very proud of her though. E36 M3s are a dime a dozen. This car...once taken car of...will take care of me.

Have you been lurking the e34 sub? You're in good hands now. If it were me doing it and I had to take my time? I'd consider pulling the doors and doing the jams, then shooting the rest when you have a chance. The jams should be super simple and require a minimum of masking, and you'll find good tape lines for when you're ready to shoot the rest.

I haven't been lurking... but there is a plethora of info here when I have searched.
Yeah,
it'll be little to no more hair off the painter's a$$/"brush" to spray a whole uniside (jambs included) in one swoop.
Paint the doors, fenders, hood, and lid OFF the car?

There is a BMW color called Florida too, but unfortunately, none called dinosaur.

Good question, I am going to do a paint job next year I hope. I am figuring on $3000-3500 for the complete + 4 new doors (not worth fixing the rust on mine, getting pretty bad). Another $750-1000 if I decide to go with either calypso or blue instead of schwarz.

Safely,
38 book hours of paint/material time for EXTERIOR panels (not including ANY repairs for dents, rust, etc). I'm not sure how a shop would add up door jambs, inner rockers, etc.

Picked it up this morn (07/30/11) and got some of the reassembly done. Belt mouldings are a bitch, truly, but I believe I figured out a failsafe route to install new ones without the bowing and twisting that can very nearly destroy a 30-$50 moulding quickly. I got the two left side belts installed very nicely, after a bit of toil and practice.
Roof panels are in and leveled out. New sunroof perimeter seals are attached. ALL interior trimming will need much cleaning/dusting. Rocker, bumper and lower door moldings will be next to install.
Awaiting some clips, lamps and a few other things for exterior to be mostly complete.

Nice, I'm jealous of the shiny paint. I found perfect roof rails on a trashed 525iT that became the touring project.
In sterling silver metallic, aren't they supposed to paint the 'sonderlacking' black first, then sterling? I never understood the process, only that's it's near impossible to match if you are only painting a wing or a hood etc.
My sunroof works fine, only when I go through a touchless wash the spray does come through over the passenger seat. Is that the rubber ring around the exterior that's worn? Is that what you replaced?
looks good. :cool

Isn't "sonderlackierung" just a word in german for special paint? Which has nothing to do with steerling silver if you didn't specially order just that color when you bought the car new. sonderlackierung could be any paint color..

My sunroof works fine, only when I go through a touchless wash the spray does come through over the passenger seat. Is that the rubber ring around the exterior that's worn? Is that what you replaced?
looks good. :cool
I don't know about spraying black paint beneath the Sterling. I know that is the process to make the "black chrome" wheels colours we are starting to see on new cars, but Sterling Silver has zero Black Ice look to it.
The "perimeter" seals are the BLACK ones that you see between the sunroof panels when standing over the car. They don't prevent water from entering (only the proper working drainage system keeps water from dripping on your passengers. These perimeter seals keep wind out and farts in, basically.
If i give you like a sixpack of import beer... Will you paint mine too? :)
Just got to weld up my rust and get new fenders.. :shifty
You get to stroke my M Tech kit too :D
I don't drink (as I've vomited more alcohol than most have had to drink) but some rock and a few naked ladies might do the trick :embarrasm
and
I've already stroked your M Tech. :paranoid:

Definitely NOT allergic to Meshuggah, so a few local (FL) passes to the chaos that is...
will be fine. :)
Until I can get fasteners for the headlamp grilles to attach to the fender corner, I will not install the grille or the corners.
Pulled the corroded, hobo M Parallel REPLICAS off and planted her to ground with freshly powder coated E38 Style 5's (5mm spacer up front). I am making messes in my cloths
AND
it I am sweating here in Florida.
I am in complete denial how gorgeous she is.

I don't want an E39 look. I like the time/period piece.
What are "facelift" mirrors? If they LOOK as good as the album sounded, I might go for them.

That's what I'm saying. My turbo project is gonna go to hell when I touch my Sterling Estate.

The colour of your Estate also disguises any paint/trim matching. :)
I like those mirrors, I suppose.

I have rust at the front of the roof rails on my touring but does not leak. What can be done? Also, I am having a hard time finding lowering options for it. Any suggestions? Anyone parting out a green one? I need the passeger fender and front bumper.
