I see so many posts in the classifieds and ebay about differentials usually selling for $300+ This makes me feel like everybody's taking crazy pills! I Pick'n'pull sold me mine for $80 plus tax.
If you've gone through this process(with a shop or yourself) chime in. How much was yours? & Do you think $300 is reasonable?

It's all about demand. Things are cheap at the junkyard cause you pull it and do all the work while another member selling his had to do work and also yes people want some money. It's just how it goes...

$250-$300 for a good LSD is a fair deal. They don't grow on trees... the fact that you found one at a self service yard is great, but it may be along time before you see another. It's all about supply and demand... the people that have them don't want to give them up and there is a finite amount of them out there. I have purchase one for less than what you paid, but the truth is it took me dozens of visits to the yards and dozens of visits since then, I have not found another. So consider yourself lucky that you scored one so cheap.

Yep 200-300 is a fair game for a ready to go lsd diff. Some are more, depending on condition/ ratio.

I got mine for $85. But shipping was $75. Still not a bad deal for a LSD.

Well I guess my main point is that $300+ doesn't seem to justify the scarcity of the part. Like in a Integra, for instance, only one make got the lsd, the type r. So out of all the Integra transmissions honda made less than 5% got the lsd therefore justifying a steep price. But it seems that before '94 lsd units were fairly common in manual bimmers...

In my area there is NO PnP, so if I want a lsd I can have a local yard try to find 1, which will cost over $300 or travel to a PnP and hope to get lucky that day.

So go find a bunch, pull them, and sell them for less than $300. You'll corner the market.

they are rarer than you'd think. This is especially the case on the West coast it seems. Maybe because most of the winter packages are in the mid-west and east coast??

A confirmed LSD diff won't be 80 bucks at a yard if they know what they're doing..
A "gamble" lump will be 80 bucks.
I paid 3000sek for mine.. Non LSD sells for 1000sek and below.. Unless it's a e30 big diff..

At a self service yard they really don't care if its an LSD... they usually have a set price for the center section, axles, etc... Yards where they pull the stuff, those guys know what they have and charge accordingly. When I was looking for mine I called several yards and only one had what I needed and he wanted $350 for it.
Like Darren said, we didn't get too many LSD cars on the left coast... really no need for them, so for us to find one at a self service yard is rather difficult.
