I think my car will only work with the 3 button remote that has a chip inside, and i need a matching chip for the car's alarm

I was looking for one, too, and I found a company on eBay that sells remotes that apparently program to this car. I am still trying to decide if I will buy one (I had two remotes, lost one and broke the other). But based on the comments, it looks like they work... Not sure if this helps. They're called KeyLess ride.

BMW used 2 different Alpine alarms in the e36. The early version used a 3 button fob. The later one used a 2 button fob. You have to match the fob to the control module. They don't interchange. The three button fob only needs 1 chip. You insert it into the control module to program it then transfer it back to the fob.

Each control module and fob has a FCC ID number on it. The correct fob will have the EXACT same FCC ID number as the control module except the last digit will be different. You canfind used fobs on ebay all the time. DO NOT get one of the Subaru 2 button fobs. They look identical and even have the correct FCC number but they do not work on BMW's. The correct fob HAS to say BMW on it. You can also get replacement fobs at keylessride.com

the three button and the two button units will work on any e36 that is prewired for alarm/keyless. The 2 button fob requires an electronic siren. The 3 button unit can use a siren or a regular car horn. If you have a 92-96 e36 that is prewired it will have a horn hidden in a metal cage next to the a/c dryer.

All this info is available if you take 3 seconds and use the search button.

"You can also get replacement fobs at keylessride.com"

That's the place I found one.
