Ok just bought a 92 525i and the only speakers that work are the rear ones on the shelf. Any ideas where I should start the hunt for the problem?

Probably the amplifier. It's in the trunk on the left side behind the carpet.

or the others are disconnected because they are blown so bad the PO just didn't want to hear them

Yea I considered this... Oh well I'll start tinkering tomorrow and make sure all connections to amp are good first.

Oh and I'll be putting in a sub soon and was wondering if there are RCA jacks behind stock stereo?

Ok I'm pretty sure it's the amp thats messed up. Is there any way to test it? Im not sure if it's getting remote power though because I set up a second amp for a sub and spliced the remote power line for the other amp and my sub amp wouldn't turn on. So maybe the stock amp is just not turning on?

if it is an aftermarket I'd pull it and check conections, really easy to mess up , including amp and speaker connections, especially if you have a common ground set up

No I know it's remote because when I bypass the remote it'll power on fine. The remote isn't putting out any power and I'm starting to think this is why the stock amp isn't working either

Your remote on the sub amp doesn't put out juice because it is supposed to receive power from a antenna or some type of power on trigger source. If your stock amp is shot you have a few choices on how to remedy this.

1. Replace the stock amp. The easiest of measures.
2. If you have a aftermarket head unit you plan to install. Remove the stock amp and rewire the car. This is not a simple task but it can be done.
3. Make sure it's not a speaker. Like everyone is telling you.

Here's the layout:
