Ok i have the rims polished out , now here is my question. What are you guys doing to resurface/recolor the faces and caps. I want to do gold faces and gold bolts. The bolts will be powder coated. I wanted to powder coat the faces but the caps are plastic. Also has anyone clear powder coated the lips to keep the shine alive. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

You are going to get hundreds of replies with each person giving their own suggestion..
You need to know how much you are willing to spend, if you can do it yourself and how important it is to you. I personally just clean all the dirt off them then put a couple coats of primer down then a couple of coats of spray paint and some clear. You CAN get spray paint to come out really good if you know what you are doing. If you have a paint gun then thats even better. Dont bother sanding the faces or nothing, you can sand blast them but thats about it, They have some wicked tough primer from the factory.

Clear on the lips will dull them down a bit. Alot of people just keep polishing then to keep the shine up

my vote is ,, if the center is gold ,, you must use gold bolts
nogaro w/ gold bolts .. is really cool on E36.. not on E34
Nogaro with chrome is very good looking

You can paint the bolts for cheap or buy new ones. If you paint them you will need to be very careful assembling the rim. Do NOT clear the lips, just sand them from 400/600,800,1000,1500 then you can use mothers aluminum polish on them to get the mirror finish and then apply some wax.
Here are the style 5's ive refinished, Ive always left the bolts alone.

for the sanding i went 220, 320, 400, 600, 1000, 1500, 2000, then mothers. took about an hour to do the sanding and about 20 minutes with the polish. I think i will just paint the faces and bolts, i am doing to the wheels one at a time so we will see how the first one goes. Thanks for the help

Did you wet sand? You really only need to start out at 400(if you used aircraft remover to take the clear coat off the lips).
You need to wet sand them if you arent, and sand each stage until there is no more black residue coming off. All the imperfections will come out with the mothers if you dont do this. Also, only sand in one direction

yeah all that was wet sanding, the lips are good to go, i have a few deeper scratches that you have to look for to see, that i should of sanded a little bit more at 220. Mothers is the best, i have also been using there back to black on the outside car plastics and it is great.

got the frst wheel done, going to be picking up some style 32's staggered soon so they will be getting refinished as well
I am undecided as to whether i should keep on doing gold bolts, polish them out, or do green. All of my cars have had some sort of green and gold combo(green for the money gold for the honies). We will see

I usually have the green in my pocket and the honeys in the passenger seat.. but not everyone could be me (sorry, couldn't resist).
I say keep the bolts gold, it looks pretty good... even though I'm not a huge fan of gold centers.

+1 Keep the bolts gold. It's a nice contrast versus throwing in a third color for no good reason.

I would have kept the bolts silver personally. Not a huge fan of the gold, but then again most people who do gold don't paint and use the centre cap so to me they look unfinished as they weren't designed to berun this way. Just a personal thing.

The center caps are getting painted gold as well. They are just currently on the car. This was a full size spare that i had.

I understand there is a super-clear clearcoat powdercoat out there. I have a place in PA, American tinning and galvanization. Check them for bolt finishing.
My vote is for gold bolts. My car is schwarz so I want to do the centers gloss black, but the set I am working on has flawless silver centers. it would be a shame to paint them so I will just clean them up.
Oh and by the way, style 32 are a painted wheel. I don't think you will have any luck stripping and polishing, I have never seen that done.
Mine are factory brilliant silver. I have seen a flatter silver finish on other sets. What do you plan to refinish them with?

Mike I hope you put your ambers on. Your car would look so much better with ambers.
Whooo I just ordered my sodablaster and a 50lb bag of medium grade soda to strip the m5 wheels. Im thinking I am going to do them white. I know I know, its a biotch to keep clean but it is the secks.

Soda isn't going to do anything to factory wheel paint (not that I have any idea what kind of paint you're dealing with). Even regular sand blasters won't touch it. I had to have my style 5's industrial sand blasted to get it off, which cost too much and left them pretty rough. My advice it to paint over it (it's not going anywhere) or have them chemically stripped.

The 32's are going to be painted, i thought about polishing but it would be to much i think. I am going to try paint stripper on them to see if that works if not just sanding and then paint.

Reagular paint stripper at Wal-Mart works awesome. Way better than aero stripper at automotive stores.

I just stripped the paint off my set this week. Got a can from a local hardware store (generic brand)... and stripped them just as good as the Aircraft stuff.
