So the gas tank was repaired when it had a small hole on the under side of the tank. It was fixed and hasn't leaked since. Now the tank hasn't been filled up to full for a while until I did today.

When I was filling the tank up I couldn't have the pump fully on where you don't have to hold it. It kept clicking and stopping like the tank was full only it wasn't. So I had to hold the pump down about half-way the whole time for it to fill.

Once I filled it up and parked it for a little while I noticed a small amount of gas that had leaked out by the filler. A little bit of gas got stuck just outside the filler, but it wasn't enough to make a puddle.

Any thoughts? Also it smells a little bit inside the cabin when I get in then I don't notice it. Maybe the smell is the charcoal canister needing replaced?

What car are we talking about? An E34 or an E30? Actually in both cases I would pull the fuel pump access cover and have a look inside. If gaskets go bad fuel can pool in that area, especially if you fill the tank. You would smell that, especially with the E30, but probably with the E34 also.
