Wheel Details:
http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b388/paintpro21/nocabstraight.jpg
Manufacturing process:
All APEX wheels are flow-formed resulting in a light weight, track and street worthy wheel
Flow-forming significantly reduces weight in the barrel by rolling the barrel out into it's final shape using large wheels/disks applying high pressure
This step is the same step that monoblock forged wheels go through to shape their barrels
By doing this, the flow-formed wheel's barrel has the same density and strength as a traditional forged wheel
This significantly reduces rotational mass at the furthest point from the center, which is the most important weight savings area on a wheel.
Strength:
These wheels are fully JWL/VIA certified. Strength testing was done by the VIA in Japan
Don't be fooled by competitors that claim to be certified, but cannot provide registration numbers
There are vendors on this forum selling wheels that are not certified, yet they claim they are. Scary stuff!
CLICK HERE (http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b388/paintpro21/apexjwltests.jpg) to see all VIA registration numbers
Misc.
Comes with carbon-look APEX center caps
Accepts OEM Roundel center caps
Does not come with valve stems
Installs using your factory lugs or a stud conversion
Accepts all wheel spacers including 5mm while still remaining hub-centric
TPMS compatible

What does shipping normally cost for these wheels? I am going to need an extra set of wheels for sure, I just want to know if the free shipping now is really worth it.

Our site does shipping quotes. Just add the regular priced wheels to your cart, and then enter your zip code on the right hand "quick cart". for East coast customers its generally around $80-90.

The list is "unofficial", you're not obligated to buy. Add your name to the list with the size/finish you would like if you consider yourself serious. There is no point in waiting to add your name, because it cause a vicious cycle of others waiting to see more names. It's much better to see how many people join the list, before we open things up for payment.

What sizes are the wheels on those E36 pictures?
There is a mix of sizes. The race cars are running 18x10's or 18x9's square. The street cars are running 18x8.5" front and 18x9.5" rear or 18x9.5" square but with fender mods. The last one is running 17x9's which is a much cleaner fit.
When's the GB for the 17 x 8.5 size? Mar/Apr? Thanks Eddy.

I just received my wheels from the last group buy and I am very pleased! Everyone talks about these being strong track wheels but let me add the finish on these wheels is VERY nice. Eddy was great to deal with and the wheels were packaged properly so they arrived in perfect condition.

We're going to make a major modification to this Group Buy by lowering the set requirement to reach higher level discounts!
The chart above would have worked if we could get the message out better on the other forums. Because we're unwilling to spam random sections of the forums to gain attention, it looks like a lot of people who requested this group buy be made will actually miss this opportunity.
More updates to come

17x8.5's are coming over in very limited quantities in this next container, and it would not be enough to meet demand. Because the wheels are not finished production as of today, I can't be certain how many of each finish will be loaded into the container leaving in 1-2 weeks.
The 17x8.5's will be available for a pre-order discount on their own once we know exactly how many units are in the container and on their way here. We'll limit purchases to exactly how many will be arriving. That will be posted before the end of the month. It will be first come first serve. More will be arriving (not discount) in April.

Major Group Buy update!
The close date of the Group Buy has been extended to Feb 28th
The discount structure has been completely changed
Far fewer members are required to receive high tier discounts
A new $200 tier has been added
Now it's just a matter of how many members purchase 18" wheels, and how many purchase 17" wheels
The Group Buys is now officially open for payment!

we only have 2 sign ups as of today for the 18" group buy (some payments will be coming in later tonight so it will go up). Mistakenly members are waiting for others to sign up, which is not the strategy to get good discounts on a group buy. This is the norm, and most people sign up last minute as they think there is a savings in waiting.
The wheels are already priced aggressively at their retail price. They aren't, and never will be available through another source that would discount them. To help out members before the driving season starts, we host group buys. During this period you can get these wheels cheaper then at any other time. Even the tier 1 discount is a huge savings over any other time of year.
Feb 28th is the last day to sign up. After that you cant' even get a $10 discount, let alone free shipping + $150 off. Just an FYI, even though only 2 have paid, the sign up price is at the tier 2 level because of how many people put their name on the list. We did this as a courtesy.
~~~~~~~~~~~~
Yes the 9.5" and 10" wheels have the same spoke concavity.
The 17x9's are already 50 off + free shipping*. If we get to 15 then the discount is even better. Signing up early makes a huge difference. This is probably the 9th large group buy I've hosted. The only ones that reach the 3rd+ tier is the ones were the majority members signed up in the first week. Doing this gave confidence to the inactive forum members (members who join the Group buy but don't post in the thread). When the people from day one say they're interested, but they hold off until the end to actually join, then those who check in the on groupbuy see poor progress. Then on the last day 30-40% of the members sign up. It means the 90% of the time the Group Buy looked bad, and then when it looks good, it's too late for others to sign up.
There is no list to add you to anymore. Payments are already being collected now. Members who are not reading the first post or visiting our site, assume that there is still a sign up list, which is not the case.
The list was created before the Group Buy opened. It was to gauge interest and determine the discount structure. The directions in the first post and our our site state that you simply need to check out through our e-commerce site to officially join.
I'm torn between Conti ExtremeContact DW and Yoko AD08. The tires are really are pretty different, but not really at the same time. Both are pretty aggressive, the Yoko is almost the ultimate street tire, and the Conti is a good blend of everything for a summer tire. This is all from reading reviews and not first hand experiences.
Sizes - 255/35F and 285/30R. Wheels either 9.5/10 or 9.5/10.5.
The last day to officially sign up is the 28th. The discount is provided in exchange for the wait. We have some of these wheels in stock, and those who buy wheels that ship immediately pay the regular retail rate. We can't offer the Group Buy discount to members who pay later as it's not fair to those who paid on time.
Eddy, Ive got a question for you.
Im looking into buying a set of wheels with performance being the main goal, styling is important though.
I love the 18's but how much do you think the 18 inch wheels will hurt my performance, over running a 17 inch wheel on an e36 m3?
Acceleration is my main concern. School me! Thanks!
Car54
02-23-2011, 10:13 PM
Depends on the weight of your 17" wheels. Compare the wheels and tire weights and try to figure out which weighs more. Keep in mind that the further from the hub the bigger the weight impact.
I'm pretty impressed with the ARC-8 weights. My stock wheels are 17x7.5/9 and weigh 21/24 lbs.
Going up to the 18x9.5/10, they're only 18.8/19.9 lbs. Pretty crazy considering the diameter/width increase, and low cost. Well done, Apex :redspot
(edit: With tires, still impressive compared to stock: less than 1 lb increase for each front wheel/tire, and a 2 lb decrease for each rear wheel/tire)
Well, I was more worried about the diameter of the wheel hampering the acceleration a bit.
If I get 18's, its gonna be these.
If I get 17's, it will either be these, SSR comps, Kosei's, or something similar.
Hell, Im confused as to weather I should get a 17 inch arc-8, or a 18 inch arc-8, simply because Im worried about straight line performance.
I plan on street racing. :devillook
lol jk
But what do you think? Weights being out of the question, an 18 inch wheel, and a 17 inch wheel in the exact same weight. Do you think the 18 inch wheel will slow me down? Thanks guys...
Car54
02-23-2011, 11:27 PM
Typically the answer is yes, a taller rim and shorter tire will hurt acceleration. Specifically the launch due to less sidewall flex in a shorter sidewall.
I'd say, don't go up to 18" unless you need a wheel wider than 9".
A 285/30/18 weighs the same as a 255/40/17...let's say 27lbs. If the 17" rim is 16lbs and the 18 is 20lbs, look at how much further the 27lb tire is from the hub, not to mention the increase in wheel weight. This hampers acceleration... but mostly during low speed, as you speed increases the difference diminishes. The 18" will usually "feel" slower or sluggish. If you did REAL motorsports, you could get cornering gains that outweigh your acceleration reduction using 18".
Good info, I may do a few track days, and maybe some auto crossing, but mainly this car is gonna be a show car for my company that Im hoping to get started this year.
It sounds to me like I need to go with a 17 inch wheel and tire package.
Thanks guys!
No. Delivery will not be impacted, as the wheels are already finished with production. The wait is only for the container to arrive at our door. Nothing else has an impact in timing.
I just ordered a set for the incoming wheels although I got them for about $15 less per tire than the Rack is selling them. I ran these last year and have a set of Hankook RS3's on the other set of wheels. Should be interesting testing.
17x9's couldn't get out today, UPS came early with a big rig to pick up 12 pallets of out going wheels (3/4's of pre-orders), so we had 3 hours less time to pack. The rest will ship out tomorrow (tuesday). We're staying until Midnight to make sure everything is boxed up and ready.
I apologize for the delay
I've pm'd them...no interest on their part whatsoever. Nice wheels....just gotta pay full price for them!!
Also interested in a set of 17x9's. Might go with TRMotorsports instead but the wheel is only 8.5.
In the next few months I'll pull the trigger. Just debating between a square setup and a staggered setup.
So we are sitting at 6 maybe 7 people ready to go for a group buy. Discounts start at 10 people? Apex, chime in?
Eddy@ApexRaceParts
07-07-2011, 02:01 PM
We are looking into hosting another Group Buy. Inventory is the primary concern. Because of what happened in Japan it takes 6-8 months from the date of a new order for it to be fulfilled. So we will only be able to do a Group Buy on a few sizes at a time, in order to guarantee availability. So we may do 2-3 sizes first, and then a month later another 2 sizes, and so on.
We'll never host a Group Buy where we sell something we can't guarantee is complete and on its way with a wait of no more then a month. I've seen people wait up to a year for a Group Buy to run it's course with 6-8 months of waiting after paying.
For our next round of Group Buys, we would be looking at shipping product within a week of the close date.
I'll post more details asap.
A group buy was just posted now http://forums.bimmerforums.com/forum/showthread.php?p=22380847#post22380847
it's for 18x9.5's and 18x10's only. 17's are starting production in a few weeks, so it's too early to start a Group Buy for those. Expect one started in 2-3 weeks for 17x9's and 17x8.5's.
