View Full Version : Moving boot lid from one car to another?

My boot lid is has a few dings and scrapes etc and instead of respraying it I think I can just replace it from a another car for less than a spray.
I have seen cars breaking of the same colour code (it might not be a perfect match but I think it'll be very close if the code is same).
It looks pretty straightforward, just a few bolts and an electrical connection but...
Has anyone done this?

My worry is that if I have to cut the electrical cord it'll be difficult to connect the cables in the cord correctly from the new lid to the old cord from the car?
After all, the cables have the juice for the locking and the lights so I want to get it right.
The lock itself etc seems easy to move over.

Boot bolts to loosen to remove lid?

Boot cord connection points, does one point have a clip connection?

What you do is pull the harness out of your boot lid (unplug it from all the points of course), install your new boot lid, and then pull your harness into it.

And yes, I've done it before, on an E36 coupe. It's not too difficult. I can't remember if I needed a tool like a wire coat hanger to help me pull or not, since it's been 9 years ago now that I did it.

edit: those bolts are the ones you want. You'll need to adjust fit of the new boot lid, so don't just put it on and then slam it. Make sure it fits properly first and adjust as necessary.

Great thanks, I might actually also cut the harness open and look at the wiring.
Searched around and apparently the wires can get frayed and cause a fire hazard.
