View Full Version : An E36 M3 for the purists out there

I have been doing some work on the M3 lately and one thing that has bothered me was front always sat higher than the rear. I also picked up some BBS RK's that where in silver but had a few skuffs on them, so I decided to redo the finish. The style 5's are my daily and the BBS will have 245 toyo R comps on them for plenty of grip. I also plan on running 20mil rear spacers and 15mil front on the style 5's.
Last shot on oem eibach height

After 1 coil (10mi are up front in the pic, hence the sunkeness of the rear

rofl.. not a very purist friendly car..
a.. missing front underpannel.. purist hate that "stuff"
b.. cut springs.. wtf are R comps going to do with "crappy" cut springs?
c... style 5s (less wide than OEM wheels) and rubber band tires... purists eyes are bleeding now
d.. big spacers on tiny 17x8" wheels... ya.. those purists have decided to just stab their eyes out to stop the bleeding
e.. that much camber on the rear of an m3 with 8" widths ...6 purists just off-ed themselves
f.. non-OEM tails and clear turn signals.. oh boy, i think half of the remaining purists just jumped into their burning fireplaces to end the misery
g... non-e36 m3 steering wheel with no airbag, horn or cover... the remaining purists have formed together and gathered arms for their assault on mankind (stanceworks)
h.. going that fast on public roads and being dumb enough to video tape it... end of all mankind
now if your trying to piss them off... GREAT JOB! lookin good :alright

Subscribed to see the RK's mounted. What are the specs on your RK's?
NO_M3RCY
01-20-2011, 10:07 PM
That setup with the Style 5's looks too small, especially in front. I don't know maybe it's just me. RK's might look okay.
And with the whole purist idea: chromed out gauges. My relatively stock M isn't like that, but I guess if it floats your boat.

Thanks guys, the title was definitely sarcasm. I am just having fun with the car and thats what it is all about.
1. Steering wheel is a ZHP Alcantara steering wheel, I have the cover but am working on making the steering wheel buttons work on my headunit.
2. Camber is 1.5 its just the rear bumper on the E36 that makes it look more extreme
2. Skinny tires for the street, meaty tires for the track.
3. The cut Eibach springs are temporary until I get my coils from GC but I am on Koni Yellows on full stiff and the ride has changed 0% after removing 1 coil. All I did was raise the spring rate and lose ride height
4. Front grill and panel fell off when I hit a tractor trailer tire on the Hwy. There is a whole new front bumper/grill/underpanel awaiting paint. this will be my track bumper, 1 piece with LTW and the street bumper is OEM M3 with ACS replica lower lip
hope that splains some things
One last update: As far as stock comments go. here is the laundry list on the go fast Im not mentioning interior/suspension/body just engine work
Euro 3.5 with intake and large elbow
24# injectors
custom tune 238whp
evosport headers
AA track pipe
AA gen 3 exhaust
PWR Rad
Spal fan
new vanos
new gaskets
the car moves just fine, next is the Vortech blower
No class, just cheap. Id sell it before u ruin it even more.
But you haven't even seen my Paisley interior yet! Or my new welded hubs for Onicamber -13 deg camber 17x10 -15mm offset next

That's more than 1.5 degrees. Doesn't look too excessive though.
Cutting springs does not increase the spring rate lol...not sure where you got that idea.
M3's are getting too cheap :az

removing 1 coil adds 100lb increase in linear spring rate.

So much hate in this thread! The thread title was OBVIOUSLY sarcasm, and it doesn't take a genius to figure this out after reading his post. He's making his car look and drive how he wants it, and that's awesome! As for me, I think the car is sick as it is and I'm looking forward to seeing it when it's done.

Thanks for all the compliments guys.
Yeah I can get a bit sensitive when I spend a lot of my scarce free time working on my cars. I am not an internet super nerd, I dont know the rules of internet protocol, I talk as if you where talking right to my face. I work damn hard for my money, I am 29 years old and I own free and clear everything above except my newest home. I could pay people to wrench on my cars but do it for fun. I always have grease under my fingernails going to work, I have restored my entire house with my bare hands, work on the 550i, and am restoring/modding a rat rod all on my own. Maybe I have just a little bit of pride in what I do. There is nothing wrong with being successful. At the same time there is nothing wrong with some people hating on my car and I understand that.
If anyone was able to see past the cutting of the springs. you would see I am running a square setup of 245 R comps on GC custom spring rates on custom valved Koni yellows. With a fully modded NA M3 ready for track usage. It just happens to have a nice stretched look for the street on my street wheels that I like.
So how about someone tell me for sure what I am doing buy cutting a progressive rate spring. I have heard a lot of talk but no proof. A calculator, and engineer for eibach, anyone show me something concrete. I showed you a calculator after all.
The steering wheel fit right in, no issues at all except wiring
That link isn't even me, and I have never been suspended.

Hey slick, when your panties are out of a bunch and you are back from OT looking at LOL Cats and what not. I already know how a progressive spring works. So so still have not shown me what removing 1 even coil of proper cutting, not adding heat to the coil does. BTW I have coils in the mail bub, I am impatient and I had half a day off so I got to cutting the coils that would go in the trash.
<<<<<HUGE MEGA UPDATE>>>
BTW guys I just got of the phone with Eibach's engineer and we found out that my 95 M3 pro kit is linear. I removed a dead coil on this design so I did nothing but change the ride height, if I remove more, effectively I increased the spring rate accordingly to the equation I showed you.
I made this post of cutting coils just to get everyone all worked up, and its hilarious.

I will start with this, Trolling is against forum rules.
So now youve increased the spring rate and put more bounce then the stock suspension geometry can handle...never mind the fact that you put aftermarket springs in stock struts to begin with...but wait...doesnt that make it a danger on the road?
Where is Philosoraptor

You intentionally create a thread that you KNOW will piss people off, and then you are insulted when people call you out on your shit. If you want respect, you have to earn it. Simple as that. You can't come in here swinging your dick around and actually expect people to believe that you have a 550, much less respect you for using that as a defense.
Just because you have a 550 doesn't mean that the purists are going to like your cut springs any more. That wouldn't make any sense.

It is with great pleasure and excitment that this be my first post/ I have been a a fan of this forum from a far and after seeing this embarassment of a thread i have decided i join..
first point:
OP (as they call it) how dare you call your car pure and YET cut a spring? Have you no idea what you have done top such a marvelous car?? i mean, my god!! you have created complete chaos in this highly regarded forum of BMW purest like myself. Have you no sense???!!! How do you live with yourself sir? engineer you say? well, with no sense clearly! ha ha ha..
Second point:
You must understand one thing sir, or shall i say purest! ha ha ha.. we here at bimmer forum looooooaaaath your "kind" with you stretchy tires and random "howdads". and your mind boggling approach to "fitment" as they call it.. and yes i do vist those silly sites to simply laugh next to my beloved cat "umberto". anyway sir.. you need to grow up and respect this godly piece of german "sex" as they say. You are ONLY allow OEM parts, and true wheels with correct fitment, nice oem heads light. a oem bumper (ha ha ha) and maybe...ummm a horn and a airbag? it is 2011 yes?
third point:
although this is my first post, and MUST re-establish ground rules and understandings of (most) great member of this site and its close understood "brother hood"..as i mentioned before i loved this forum from a far and KNOW how things work here and the reasons why.. I make it my honor to explain in simply english for you, sense you have make believe education and are , as they say, a "ratard" ( i know u guys seen the Hang over, me an umberto def did! ) Anyway, and can related to the bashing you recieved and DESERVED!! so here is what you must understand abt BF.com
we hate your kind...why? cause well, we hate anything other than pure! duh! We (and now myself) will and mostly post for mere post count, and the fact the we do noting but m***terb** while we sit with our cats (or dogs, gerbels) to bash ppl like you late in the evening when most ppl like yourself has a girlfriend or wife, or one night stand...but here we bothers deal with it fine! how? well look at our posts and clear higher knowlege of BMWs! you know about these car the them idiots that MADE them in GERMANY!! that higher knowlege appeals to us more than say a what someone like you would call a "sex life" or a relationship of any kind. our male parts our exterme small, therefore we here at bimmer forums make up for this by making YOU feel small like us and our male parts.. we will act "hard" (like they say in the street) to intimadate you... we will threaten you and claim we will say what we say online to your face..although thats not true..we go to our schools or PT jobs and come home to our grand forum to bash your kind and play black Ops or W.O.W all day/night with our beloved pets by our sides.. who needs to go out in public?? i mean really "OP"!! therefore it is clear we would NEVER dare to say such things to your face. besides our acme medication is very sensitive to the suns ultra voilet rays, therefore its recomemed we stay home anyway..how else will we watch our healthy diet or beef jerky and captin crunch!? We WILL ALWAYS know more than say these companies like Eibach or GC or Bimmerworld or even GOD... So whatever you "research" or whatever "links" you post or "calls" you make is cleary wrong. For example OP..we here feel Michael Schmacher is a horrible driver, he probably cuts his springs also! ha ha ha! your friends with this lame race car drive on facebook? arent you? ha ha ha! you probably are.. ha ha ha! anway, do see my point(s) and randomness? do you see my lack of attention to grammer/spelling and puncuation? thats what we do here at BF.com.. whatever we do we will always be right..understand that sir...
in ending, i want to thank all by brothers for runining your afternoon! we hope that made its way to runin your night.. we will all be here next time u post. and i hope you learned your lesson here at BF.com. Good night to you sir.. I must go and attended to my cat umberto..he thinks my PS3 wireless custom control (with it custom BMW logo) is his toy again....oh u silly umberto!!

You know, for a 29 year old you sure do act like a 17 year old.

First off I dont need to post anything. Second, I dont need to prove myself by showing you these pics or my possessions.
Lastly I never got mad because people didnt like my car, really no one said they didnt like the car. Everyone's bitching was about cut coils.............which they have no leg to stand on, and people commenting on how these cars are getting cheap (ie young dumb kids are getting them and ricing them out).
The coil sits on the bottom perch like any other spring...WFT have you never assembled a strut assembly?
Bash away fools to your hearts desire, no one can look past the cut coil can they? No one can admit when done properly its not a catastrophic car failure. Pull your heads out of your asses.

The eibach springs are flush on the top like the pic above. The bottom coil wind is standard like the bottom left spring, so removing 1 coil makes the next coil line up properly with the strut cup.

I was def the First in my area to have poke on a Vette. I didnt hook up very well so I sold it, must have been that damn leaf suspension, I cranked it all the way down.

i personally dont care what you do to your cars but dont sit here and say cutting springs is acceptable practice on ANY car, much less an M3. What is acceptable is BUYING THE CORRECT, HIGH QUALITY PARTS for your car!
that 550 is like brand new and your cutting the springs on that too?!
either do things right or get a car you can afford. not that its too bad because you are only making my car worth a mint.
and also, for some wild reason, im gona go out on a limb and say you have little to no knowledge of mechanical engineering. proceed.

^^^ you sire are correct. I contacted Kelly Blue Book, I mentioned i was cutting my springs on my car in Virginia. This actually appreciated your car in NJ by 10%!!!! Subsequently your car insurance will be going up as well next month to cover the newly found high value in your E36.
As far as getting a car I can afford, well I can afford them all since I don't have loans on any of the 3 vehicles I have.
Now I understand how everyone's panties are in a bunch when it comes to cutting coils, but I did my research and with a linear spring with a dead coil at the bottom, and I only removed the dead coil, my suspension has changed ZILCH, ZIP, NADA. Tu Comprende?

correct. The airbag is not wired up yet hence the 1 light, the 2nd light is my check engine, this is due to removing the charcoal canister after my euro 3.5 install the intake was too large to fit and I didnt need the charcoal canister. the 3rd light well thats because I turned on my headlights for the tunnel. You see E36's with HID's get the LBF light when the headlights turn on. I could put a capacitor/resister in there but why? I just push the check button.

you know what i find odd....people discuss cutting springs at length in the e39 section and no one gives anyone shit about it, there are several people who confirm the changes in spring rate and ride, its a viable solution
but over here everyone just jumps down the guys throat, its not your car your not riding in it or anything else. has anyone that has talked shit even ridden in a car with cut springs? (done the right way not just chopped at random)
maybe i should just start trolling the 3er sections and flinging shit at everyone who has one thing wrong with their car

the funny thing is, my car is worth more than yours, its worth top top dollar. Every part on my car is well thought out and high quality. Mint body, perfect condition interior, strong motor.
What is even more funny is you calling me a moron. I provided Eibachs phone number and told everyone if you don't believe me....call. There is the number so call. I dont have a cup kit, never said I did. I said I have Koni yellows custom valved for my coilovers, I decided to cut my linear eibach pro kit per an informed decision. I cut the coils after ordering my GC coilovers. I dont half ass anything.
I dont know what a troll is, but I have been a member for 5 years.
I am exhausted at repeating myself, read the damn thread and it makes sense, dont read page 1 then post.
Lastly I came here to prove a point, and I did, so case closed for me. I educated you people, showed you links, phone numbers, valid points for my case. I guess it's true, ignorance is blind.

Thanks for the hilarious read, OP. From beginning to end, this thread is an abortion of human cognition. Your car and your work is an affront to the M3 community and may God have mercy on your soul, because none of us will.
There are good ways to get as low as you seem to want to go, and there are bad ways. Just a hint, chopping a spring while it's still on the shock is the bad way. Even if one assumes that chopping a spring is a perfectly good thing to be doing, and that's a stretch in and of itself, cutting it on the perch is not unlike trying to cut an umbilical cord before a mother's water breaks. It is telling of your mentality.

I am sure his M3 appreciates you being its knight in shining armor. In older BMWs manuals it recommends cutting a coil for a sportier feel, so maybe you should take your issue up with them. It is ghetto, but it is going to make a negligible difference to ride quality if it is a dead coil.

Have you ridden in a car with them?
My buddy cut a dead coil out of his stock springs on his e39 540 and its rides great.
Its not harsh, hell its not much different, but the car does look alot better.
I agree the proper way to do it, is to buy proper lowering springs.

You get the exact same result. You would have to be a moron to slip while cutting the spring and hit the shock body, let alone hold it there long enough to rupture it. Why exactly he did not just pop off the upper strut mount and take the spring off, I do not know, but it does not make a difference in the end.
Flattening out the last coil will help with seating, but as long as the spring seats correctly cut, the coil will flatten out anyways.

No, you do not.
Flattening out the last coil will help with seating, but as long as the spring seats correctly cut, the coil will flatten out anyways.
If you don't flatten the end the spring will have a lower spring rate because the perch coil will be partially active. Not flattening it will work, but it's not the proper way to do it.
.

No, you do not.
You seem to understand this very well, considering you are quoting others rather than typing your argument. Ignoring the fact the spring is slightly easier to get to seat when you flatten out the last coil please inform me of a few bits of knowledge you apparently have due to your conclusions.
What spring rate are his shocks designed to work with?
What is the original spring rate/length?
What is the spring rate/length of the cut spring?
What is the spring rate/length of the cut spring with the last coil flattened out?

I don't have the answer to either the rate when the spring is cut, or when the spring is cut with a flattened coil. Drew does not either, so we are just guessing on whether flattening a coil on his car will hurt or help. Or at least I believe he does not, if he does I would like to know the rates :D
All I am trying to say is it just looks ghetto, and is ghetto to do it that way, but doing it the "correct" way would not necessarily yield any different or better results.
I don't want to argue about it anymore, already got sucked into this way more than I wanted to :rofl OP is dumb for posting this up anyways, as he knew a shitstorm would ensue.

I think you're assuming he knows what the initial rate is, and how much has been cut off.
Personally, I'm a progressive rate spring fan myself. I'm not in it for a super low or super stiff ride, I'm in it for sportier suspension and improved handling over stock with enough cushiness that my slowly aging buttocks do not become mashed potatoes.
I find that when you set your suspension goals on ride height, you tend to butcher the configuration, and when you set your goals on handling, the opposite occurs. Form follows function always.

I haven't logged on in a few days, its hilarious how far this post has gone. To this person above^^^^ you must not have ever used an angle grinder. The spring was compressed with 2 spring compressors. I did not feel like taking the top hat off the shock, I would still need to spring compressor to do so. It takes about 30 seconds to cut through the coil, I dont see how anyone could lose control of the angle grinder and slice a shock in half. Its like someone cutting a steak on their dinner plate and you come over screaming, you could slip and cut your stomach with that knife! Also if you knew anything about the E36 M3 the Koni shock sits inside of the steel OEM lower shock mount where it attaches to the hub. That shock is protected with about 1/3" of steel.
LASTLY torching springs is the least desirable with the exception of heating the spring under load and compressing all the coils. Inducing heat into the spring will alter the steel more so that cutting it.
