View Full Version : Dropping the transmission

I have to drop the transmission to fix my shifter lean. What else should I do when I've got it out?
I know my pilot bearing is on its way out as I have a whining noise when the clutch is engaged. Anyone know that part number? I can't find it on real oem.

Are you talking about the throwout bearing (clutch release bearing)? That's what makes the whine.
Part number for that is 21 51 2 226 729

No, the pilot bearing. The noise goes away when I disengage the clutch (push the pedal in)
Obvious questions are:
How many miles on clutch/pressure plate?
Considering upgrading to LTW flywheel anytime soon?
Are you still on factory shifter bushings/shifter? Want to upgrade to SSK?
I'd also replace the pivot pin and clip.
The problem with a car like this is that literally just about everything can be upgraded or replaced because there is a better option or the factory part is so old it should be replaced "just in case"

I've already got a LTW flywheel, and the clutch is good (not sure how many miles).
I was going to replace the transmission mounts. Not sure of the bushings. Is there any way to tell if they're good? I don't have a SSK, but I think the throw is fine as is.
I'll add the pivot pin and clip to the list.

If the transmission bushings haven't been replaced just replace them and be done with it.

Your pilot bearing is not spinning when the clutch is engaged (pedal up).
It only spins when there is a speed difference between the crankshaft & the transmission input shaft (ie, when the clutch is disengaged (pedal down)).

Hrm. Then what would be causing that noise? I only hear it when I'm stopped (probably due to a lack of exhaust & road noise)

I have a similar problem. I think it is the throwout bearing. Everytime I slow down with the clutch engaged when I put the shifter into first, clutch still down it makes a whinning noise as something inside spools down until whatever it is stops. Is that the throwout bearing or something else?

Further research has led me to the input shaft bearing instead of the pilot bearing. Is this internal to the transmission? I really don't want to do internal work if I can avoid it...

You might just be hearing the 1st gear synchronizer spinning up.

jrcanes55: Sounds like your issue is TOB.
agenthubcap: could be your TOB too.. figure when the clutch is disengaged, the TOB still spins, just not under load, so maybe putting it under load quiets it down if it's coming apart.. maybe not typical, but conceivable.. ?
I almost didn't replace my pilot bearing when I did the clutch, glad I did because the old bearing wasn't as smooth as I thought once I removed it. (117k)

Once the transmission is apart from the engine, is there a thin metal “gasket” or spacer that is supposed to go between both? Is it necessary to have this? It looks like it gets sandwhiched between the engine/tranny.
TIA.

There is a dust shield that goes between the engine and transmission. Just like every other engine in the world.
You'll want that, otherwise road debris can bounce up into the flywheel/bellhousing. VERY bad.
It should be on there, though. Just re-use it... it's not like it goes bad or anything.

Since my diff is going to be at the shop for a while, I figured this is an ideal time to do my transmission work.
How much room is required to be able to remove the transmission? Can I do it on jack stands?

Yes. I did an auto to manual swap with only jackstands, a floor jack, and a bottle jack
NoLastName

Absolutely... I've done several clutch jobs with jack stands and hand tools. The higher you can raise the vehicle (safely) the better. Otherwise it can be a real PITA to contort up into the trans tunnel to get at things. I used a set of 6-ton jack stands.
As far as your comments about noise when your foot's off the clutch pedal, that could be a bad input shaft bearing - but since you mentioned you have a lightweight flywheel I'd lean more towards gear rattle. My LTW flywheel definitely creates some chatter at idle even though I'm using a mix of ATF and gear oil in the trans. It's quiet when cold but will start making noise after the oil warms up. A minor tradeoff in NVH I've learned to live with. Some cars will make more noise than others. Mine sounds like the car in this vid... I'm guessing this is what yours sounds like too? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7I6uCZjrXZM

if the noise goes away when the pedal is down, it is the throw out bearing, ask me how i know....

i'll bite. how do yo know?
it is like that till the TOB grenades, then it acts completelty different
if youre going to drop the tranny, get the pilot bearing, 6 new pressure plate mounting bolts, new throw out bearing, pivot bearing, shifter shims, shifter foam inside the cup, shift shaft seal.
those are all easy to do while it is out.
