went to the junkyard and picked up a 3.5MAF from a e39 540i. when i got home i noticed that it was wrapped in electrical tape. unwound the tape and found a piece of cardboard covering this:

IF this is sealed completely (which is was), is it ok to still use it in my car? I know that if there is any air escaping it causes problems, but I just want to make sure if its still good when i put in the throttle body and cold air intake

If you in a bind and absolutely have to use it, I would buy some fiberglass resin and cut out a sheet to cover the hole. You don't want to suck up anything in your intake.

I used some thick rubber splicing tape over the piece of cardboard. smoothed out the edges and after several layers this is how it looks:

i know it will hold, my only concern is if this will cause any performance issues

FYI - you CANNOT repair the HFM with Fiberglass, ABS, EPOXY, silicone, etc. The plastic is SUPER oil resistant. I've got the EURO Airbox with a broken temp sensor mount, I've tried EVERYTHING to fix that.
Ended up buying a box from the UK.
If you need an HFM housing, I got a spare from a 540. Need it?

PM me for price.
From the looks of it, it seems sealed nicely. Curious what impact, if any this will have on airflow considering the inner wall isn't smooth.

Yeah I guess if there is any impact, its going to be very minimal. Heres a pic looking inward

I can sell you my 540 MAF for $75 shipped. I'll include the body and the sensor. Genuine BMW.
If you just need the housing, I'd sell for $50. Although honestly, you can get a China one off EBAY for around that, and swap the sensor.
