my muffler has a hole in it and its louder than a fart can and won't get inspected with it. i have been slowly fixing whats wrong with the car so it CAN be inspected and i can drive around worry-free.

can't i just buy a magnaflow muffler with a tip? it seems like the "muffler" on this car is what i would say is half an exhaust system.
some autozone guy priced a replacement for $370. seriously?

do i need to cut the end of the exhaust to cut the muffler off?

i think the size is 2.25" so i'm looking for a 2.25" inlet and 2.50" dual outlet. i like to hear the car but i don't like "fart can" loudness. thanks

just find a used magnaflow that will fit. Then go to a muffler shop and have them cut your old muffler off and weld the new one on. DONE

simple.
but the muffler is 31" long, a flowmaster or any other is about 13", i don't think i could find an 18" muffler tip unless its for a truck.
would i need to weld a muffler tip and then weld a muffler on the end? i have never dealt with such a long muffler

It will be a custom setup, so you'll have to weld or use clamps. You can salvage the pipes leading to the muffler and then weld on a magnaflow, but you will need to bend the pipes. If you don't have the tools, muffler shops are pretty cheap, just bring in the muffler and tell them what you want. Aluminized pipes and mufflers are usually junk, typically good for 5 years in salt.

get a magnaflow muffler, for 80 bucks or so. go to an exhaust shop cut off the resonator and muffler run 2.25 inch pipe from the cats to the muffler into dual stainless steel tips welded on, and there ya go... not hard the shop will charge u 150 for eveyrthing prob, with installation so looking around 250 give or take.

sounds like a plan :D
hopefully its an easy job. if easy enough, i can do it myself, just dont have anything to cut the pipes with

I think I might do this too because I can weld but to be honest buy the pipe at least from a shop and have them bend it. They will be able to bend it a lot easier then you could :)

i really like the sound of the stock m20 exaushst, if you can find a decent used muffler from maybe a pnp or something id prol got that route and save the hassle. Its not like we have much room for hp improvement has anybody done this w/ an m20 and noticed anything? how'd it sound? clips?

I have been working on cars a long time, and honestly I will never mess with exhaust. It actually ends up being cheaper to just take it to a shop.

Yeah videos would be neat.
I like to be able to hear it but not when it's as loud as it is now.
It'd prob just be easier to buy a replacement muffler, cut the old one off and weld the new one on?

+1 Unless you've already got the benders, welders plus the assorted hardware and tubing it usually doesn't make sense to DIY an exhaust. Making it all fit together underneath your car is what they do all day everyday.

Do NOT cut off the resonator or you will sound fart cannish. Just get a muffler that will fit, Magnaflow seems the most popular, take it to an exhaust shop and they will cut and weld the new muffler and a length of pipe to fit in place of the old muffler, no big deal reallyand should not be all that expensive. Rule of thumb for non fart can sounding mufflers is to get something with chambers, not just a straight through or "bottle" design. Flowmasters, though chambered, can be a bit loud, not really in keeping with the overall tone of street a BMW.

You'd probably gain zero - 2hp, I don't think its worth the hassle, unless you don't have access to a cheap but decent used stock replacement. People always compliment the sound of my stock system as it sounds really good, every exhaust component on my car was replaced a couple years ago though so that might have something to do with it.

+1 on that. I let the muffler shops deal with it. Heat cycling plus oxidation = NEW EVERYTHING when it comes to exhaust.
