Hey Guys,

I am trying to finalize my wheel / tire combo for my touring and wanted to run the specs by you guys too make sure I am not going to get into any rubbing issues. And yes I did search but could not find the specific info needed.

I am planning on running my set of Breyton Magics on my touring which has been lowered using H&R Sports and Bilstein sports. The Magics are 17x8.5 all around with a 13 offset and I am planning to get 245/40/17's all around.

I would like the wheels to go out as far as possible without rubbing of course. Would the 13 offset be as far as I can go or should I get some spacers? From what I have read, the 245/40/17's shouldnt be a problem. Is there a way I could test the fitment and get a better idea of what I can do?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

They shouldn't rub at all and if they do it would only require mirror rolling to get them to clear.

Would that be with spacers or without?

Thanks.

They won't rub. You might be able to get a 10mm spacer in there before you'll have to roll the fenders. I had 18x8.5 et 6 with a 235/40 and zero rubbing.

Currently have 17x8.5 et 15 with a 235/45 tire and it seems like it's way too far in. Considering 20mm in the rear and 10mm front.

What type of suspension are you running on your touring?

Racing Dynamics.

If you look in the recent thread "post a photos of your touring" I put up pictures with different wheels.
Mille Miglias for winter, 17x8.5 et 15. 235/45/17
Staggered ACS type 1, 17x8.5/9.5 et 13 front and rear 235 and 255/45/17
MK1's 18x8.5 et 15 245/40/18
M Parallel Reps 18x8.5 et ? 245/40/18
OZ's 18x8.5 et 6. 235/40/18 fronts.
Style 19's, 17x8 et 20. 235/45/17

None of the above rubbed. No spacers. The OZ's had 265/40's on the rear when I first bought them, and they rubbed under hard bumps/turns, so 245/40's replaced...

Your front will be just fine. You may get a very slight rub on the right rear when you've got more than a couple pounds in back, depending on the squareness of the tires you're running. I was running 245/50R16 BFG G-Force Sports on 8" wheels at et13 all around when I experienced that rub on my Touring (which is on the B&G Touring-specific sport springs, and RD Bilstein shocks).

Thanks for the info, both e34moneypit and 357. The pics were very helpful too. I think I am going to get some 5mm hubcentric spacers and call it a day. That would make my overall offset an 8. With the 245/40/17's on the 8.5 in rims, I should be good.

Hopefully my ride will be done soon. Bought it 2 months ago and have only driven it about 5 days!

I'm running ET6 17x9 all around with 225's front and 235 rear. Have had 235's up front on these rims too no rubbing at all, 45 profile tyres.
And my summer setup is ET10 18x8.5" all around with 225/40 up front and 235/40 rears. (have been running 245/45/18 that will rub a little at all corners) 245/40 18 works great too.

The touring is lowered 60/40.

Though 245/40/17 is not so common to run at all on a BMW with 17" rims.. However your setup should be no problem to run at all, as those tyres has less roll diameter than stock.
Why do you choose specifically 245/40/17?
And not for example 225 or 235/45/17 all around? Or maybe 255/40/17, those are more common tyre sizes on 17" bmw rims :) Not that it really matters.

Your offset would be 18mm. (not sure if you typo'd or calculated the wrong way)

Oh really? I thought the further out you pushed the wheel the lower the offset became? +13 offset for the rim + a +5mm push out (spacer) = a total of +8 offset.

Either way, my goal is to get the wheel as far out towards the fender lip as possible without rubbing or rolling the fender.

Thanks for the info.

You're right... I don't know what I was thinking. Please disregard.

No. You have been thought wrong.

13 - 5 = 8

When you add a spacer when it comes to wheel offset, you actually remove the width of the spacer from the original offset.

For example, if we have an offset of 0, then if you would add a spacer of 7mm you would have a final offset equal -7.

Whew, thanks. I thought I losing it for a sec there.

Also, to answer your last question about my tire size choice, I chose the 245/40/17 because its overall diameter is 3% less than stock. I figured this would give me a bit of leeway regarding clearing the fender when adding the spacer and pushing my wheels out more.

Thanks again for everyones help.

Nah, I was the one losing it. I think I'm back to normal now. :cool

Hehe.

Well, just have in mind that 245/40/18 was a standard size among many other tyre sizes on the e34.
So you can easily roll on 245/45/17 if you'd like that too, which would end up being the same size as the one i just mentioned.

No problem! Hope everything turns out just like you want it too!
