View Full Version : Preparing to sell my 540/6 - question

My 5 series is my DD an I recently made the decision to move from my beloved 95 540/6 to a 2001 530i. It's pretty wild how different the cars are. They each have thier untouchable qualities. The 540 is a snappy torque monster and the 530i is quick and well mannered. I have had to completely re-learn my clutch habits and I am beginning to appreciate winding out the 6. The 8 rarely needed widing out except for fits of illegal speed.
Now to the point. My 540 has a small hole at the rear of the resonator but the remainder of the exhaust system seems to be holding up. It adds a little rumble which I've grown to like. If I was keeping it I would replace it from the cat back which is a $700 or $800 excercise or so (DIY) with an OEM style replacement. It seems that there is a lot of opinion about appropriate replacement exhaust on this car. Should I replace it to sell it, or lower the price commesurately and leave the existing exhaust? As I understand it 95 and older cars don't need to pass emissions in Mass so that shouldn't be a stopper for a sale.
Just looking for feedback.
I am still getting some outstanding little items cleaned up before I sell it so no rush. Probably better to sell it in the spring anyway.
Thanks,
Mark

I would leave it...let the next owner decide if they want to replace it or not. Say if you put $700 into a catback, do you think you'll get $700 more for your car? Most of the time the answer is NO. Set the price appropriately, fully disclose issues with the car and the right buyer will come along. GLWS! :)

No pics yet, it's covered in snow.
It's black with a tan interior, sport package of course and factory throwing stars. No notable dents, just a few little parking dings and similar scratches from living the life of a DD.
Completely bone stock except for the radio and HID upgrade. I have a long list of preventive and regular maint. done to the car that I haven't organized yet.

Black on Tan 540 / 6? or an M-Sport? Are the wheels staggered? Any idea how much you want for it? You can PM if you like. Also, what's the mileage?

Interested for other reasons actually - I would certainly consider an M-Sport. You found an M-Sport?

LOL! There are other reasons for my interest. Also, I tend to go through cars - in case you noticed... :evil2 LOL!!! In all honesty, I would probably trade the 540/6 for an M-Sport.

I had noticed. I have a bond with mine, don't think I could part with it but sure wish I could put a 6 after the 540 :(, plus I wouldn't want any other color combo.

I'm on Car # 28. This is just personal cars as daily drivers, not including my company cars I've Built/Owned while prepping expedition rigs/crawlers. I'm 36 :)

Aquila:
It's not an M-sport. It's a 540/6 with the M-Technic suspension, T-Star wheels (non staggered), sport seats and such.
You realize I'm in Massachusetts and you're in CA. Complicates things a smidge.
Cheers.

I believe Michael might have some "connections" on our side of the continent that could facilitate things:

How big is the hole? Have you had a muffler shop look at it? As long as the part is still solid you might be able to have it repaired with a slug of brazing or a patch stick-welded over it. Two years ago some road debris punctured a 1/4" hole in my muffler but the shop was able to close it without needing to have the entire thing replaced.

They tend to go at the sandwich section at the rear of the resonators...they disintegrate...you could get some braze in there but you'd keep pushing farther and father to fin good metal.
