hey guys quick question, i have an e36 316i, question is is it obd? 96 model, should be obd2. but no sticker under the hood and only a 20 pin plug. no 16.
also, its lacking a little in power, what are some good hp/$$ efficient non boganish modifications i can do for under 1k?

I think europe might have had a different requirement for the year on OBD2, look under the dash, on the driver's side. If the OBD2 plug is there, its OBD2. Should be by the clutch.
Also, it's a 316. People with 318s here have trouble getting power, and our M42/M44s are more powerful than your 318s. I dunno if power is what you should seek out of that engine.
Then again, you DO live in Europe, do the Euro S50B32 swap

You can always call a dealer service dept. They can tell you if its OBDI or II. Just have the production date handy. It should be listed on a sticker in the drivers door column.

thanks for ur quick responces guys,
unfortunatly im in australia. which means its incredibly difficult to get away with an engine swap as far as i know, u need to replace sus, brakes, dif, gbox etc. might as well save up and buy a 325 or somthing. damn these laws. gone are the days where u could just rip out any engine and slap it in without worrying about insurance, MOT etc.
anyway. looks like im out of luck, no 16pin near the clutch and nothing written on the drivers side door column, looks like the obd2 reader and the 20pin to 16 pin converter are going to waste.
anyway, the reason i ask about the power is not because im a prepubescent adolescent luny looking for a thumping rice car, i just thaught there might be a way to cheaply squeese an extra 20hp out of the engine for under a few 100 quid. the reason i ask is coz iv just run into about 700 buks for my 21'st and plan to spend it on my car. was thinking about those 300 dollar leather seat covers, a new sweel (as this one has cigarette marks on it, bloody disrespectful previous owner didnt realise what he/she had) and a decent cleanup of the motor. was gunna try seafoam but heard some bad stories. lol.
would have about 300 left so i figured id ask here if there was anything like an m3 exhaust or somthing i could just give it a bit more torque when trying to pull out in front to overtake.
dont get me rong, its quick enough, lucky for me its a manual. heard some bad stories about the autos torque.
btw, the car has done 280,000km, im guessing thats about 160,000 miles and it still runs/sounds in great condition.
it has a stutter when not at WOT. like u hit a headwind for a second or 2 every 5 seconds or so. seems to be worse when cold. thats why i wanted to know what obd it was, to see if i could use this obd2 scanner. using the dash tecnique didnt work so i was a bit baffled when i found no 16 pin plug. changed the dizzy leads, plugs, fuel air and oil filter, battery, and still no change. thinking o2 sensor, as im guessing the previous owner had no idea they even existed. need a code puller to be sure tho.
so im guessing because this car wasnt released in the us, it didnt need to be obd2 compliant. but, are all bmw's atleast obd1 compliant? i didnt think it would have no obd protocol at ALL.
anyway, soz to ramble on.. BTW heres a good question to start a thread on, if u had 1k, that u had to spend on ur car, what would YOU buy?
ps, im an idiot. didnt realise u meant the production date was on the side door column. i know what the date is tho, its 10/96. cheers flyfishvt.
