I own a 1994 320i sedan, Im getting the head gasket done in a couple days, it has 230k on it and am wondering if this cars worth holding on to and fixing up as I originally had planned?

or...would it be best to sell and purchase a newer model with less original kms on it? The car is in really good condition overall and I love it still :confused

Thanks

Why would you pay all that cash to get rid of it?

Part it out or keep it, but honestly, I'm a beginner so take what I say with a grain of salt. Good luck!

is it a HG problem or did your block crack that turns into white smoke with a bit of water spitting at the end of your tail pipe???

I am only paying $600 to change the head gasket

230,000 km is only 140,000 miles so I would keep it. at 140k its just barely broken in.

Out of all honesty, 140,000 is a lot of miles for these cars. Not only are you going to pay 600 to fix the head gasket but there is also quite a few other things that go wrong with these cars as well. Not mention after you even fix the gasket it's not guranteed that it won't go out again. If you really love your car then go for it. E36's are more than just a car, if you own one it's more than likely a hobby as well.

LOL, not sure what to think on weather or not 230k is good or bad :s

....guess it would really depend on how hard of miles them were in the end ;)

It's true

Isn't 140,000 miles a lot on any car?

Ha just look on the forum.. There's ATLEAST 3 new problems everyday, and most cars have over 100,000 on them. It's not that 100,000 is a lot of miles but the cars are in excess of 10 yearsold. The components are starting to break down from age a lone.

I'm a first time BMW owner, so just not too sure how much is too much with these engines when it comes to mileage :)

I do know that 230k on an American car is getting up there...

For an 07 no, 140m isn't a lot. For. 92', yeah.

Depends on make model. I've had. 2 camaros 1 w/305 and 1 w/350 both v8's. Over heated both for long amounts or time and nothing happened internally. Both cars had over 230,000 and all that was ever replaced was a radiator, waterpump, heater coil and battery. Still ran as strong as ever too.

those cars had cast iron heads on them I bet. It makes a big big difference. The other thing that makes a difference is the fact these are inline 6 cylinder engines so the head is the equivilent of a single head on a v12. In other words they are very long and narrow. The biggest issue though is aluminum.

The 305 I Had was aluminum

at 140k you will need to do the wheel bearings soon and most of the bushings in the suspension (not to mention reinforcing the rear sub frame if you drive hard). these cars are great, but be prepared to replace a lot of dumb little stuff, also if your car is manual be ready to change its fluid a lot if you beat on it, otherwise you will probably end up loosing second.
