Hello well i got my new BMW. And it's a 1997 318TI and it has a few dents and dings. but the motor is strong. but I'm having a issue with the heater it wants to kind of work. but it don't work right. the car gets to opt.temp and then gets cold. It might be the thermostat. but yet the car cools down and has water in the engine. so Meany this thermostat is different. not quite sure. the BMW book that i picked up don't show a screw on the thermostat is their one that i can't see? the second problem is the stereo it needs codes. any idea on why the BMW dealership can't find my stereo? I gave them my serial number of course and the model number is their any other way to get the codes? Anyways here the pictures :)

You say "Look at my new toy ...!" But then there is no pics to look at! Boo! :D I was interested in getting ti to work on, but around here they are all expensive ... basically equal to the 325/8 and definitely more than a regular 318. Love the hatch and look, but not at the same price as a 6!

When you are idling or low speed the gauge goes to 12:00 but then at speed it drops down to just above the blue? That sounds like your thermostat is sticking open. That would also impact your heater since that is the source of heat. Fix the t-stat then see if the other problems go away.

you need a new thermostat... its stuck. happened to me once. i have an extra one for half the price if you want it.
plus i have a few other new parts for it that i don't need, if you're interested shoot me a pm.
reason i don't need them is because i have a s52 now...

Yeah i was going to upload pictures. half sounds fair. but i differently need a warranty on the car. im probly going to sell it after 40K miles all depends on how long the car will last cuz the car is extreamly good condition. but the thing is if i need a new thermostat the car would over heat.. i mean it would over heat on any other car.so is their some magical reason why if the thermostat was stuck. don't that mean that it can't get water. or put water into the engine. also the engine say im doing 60. the car gets to opt. temp then kinda goes really cold haha. i like the fact that it does that but i would love it more when i get my heater working. it's cold but it's what i do to drive my amazing bmw:)

Does anyone know what that yellow tinge on the engine is? I have an m44 too and have the same yellow tinge.

Also, is that a broom handle propping up your hood? lol

If the thermostat sticks open then it causes the engine cool down.

I think the yellow tinge on the valve cover is a factory protectant so the alluminum doesn't start to corrode.

Call a different dealer for the radio code. Try Quality Imports in Fort Walton Beach, Fl. They gave me my code without issues.

its not smart to keept he defective t-stat. reason being is that the car will run cool and might make it run lean or rich which would mess up your gas mileage. ask me how i know.

I think that is my problem. I've got a 318i m44 and I've got a wacky temperature gauge that drops from operating temp down to cold randomly. I got a CEL the other day and it threw P0420 which is a bad cat/sensor code. Do you think a sticking thermostat could be causing all these problems?

Also I forgot to add that I cleared my code and the CEL has yet to come back on. I've put about 60 miles on the car since.

Well in like 5 minits i'm going to take the thermostat off and then boil sum water and make sure it's opening and closing. . and what " Does anyone know what that yellow tinge on the engine is? I have an m44 too and have the same yellow tinge." what yellow thing on the engine. not a broom stick haha. that would be epic those things are tanks. they used to be around all the time. the hood supports are so expensive.. haha

What I meant was the discoloration of the valve cover compared to the rest of the engine
