Hi all BMW owners, I'm doing my oil change and not sure how much oil to buy. I want to get the big bottle of Mobil 1 0W-40 but I can only find it in quarts. What are the correct specifications of how much oil engine takes?

If you have to ask how much oil goes into your car, you shouldn't own it.

The M52B28 takes 6.5 litres of oil.
Get an owners manual if you don't have one.
You can also fill up to 6 litres and then check the dipstick to see how much is left.

Put oil in till the dipstick says full. Buy ten quarts to CYA.

Google solves 95% of all problems ;) And just to throw some logic (Not trying to be rude) oil is sold by the quart, if you knew it was between 6 and 7 quarts... buy 7 quarts.

6.5 quarts...I never understood why people can't just simply answer the goddamn question instead of giving the PO a difficult time.

Wow since when is this forum so unhelpful? Cut the guy a break, you took the time to post in the thread, and you know the info he's asking for. You can always throw in your "stupid n00b learn to search" comment before/after you answer his question :dunno
Edit: just realized the santa hats on the dunno smiley's are finally back in style :rofl

Keep pouring till it overfills. But first you gotta get rid of your old oil, to do that you'll need some power steering fluid to steer your old oil out of the system.

To change your blinker fluid...
...you will need to remove your radiator and battery. Sometimes it also helps to remove your driver seat...

Well thanks, I know how to change my oil and lots of other stuff. I always buy 8quarts and put in 6 and a half then add little by little the rest as miles go by. These engines tend to burn oil but not as a bad thing just how they work. That's why it has a sticker on dashboard saying check engine oil regurly. Just wanted to see why sites say different amounts for specification, and wondering exact amount. Sorry for sounding like newbie. What a Christmas spirit folks! Happy Holidays!!!

For future reference, the search tool on this forum provides many answers. Sometimes it's not as useful as people claim, but in this case, you'd have found your answer.
There are also many threads on type of oil to use. If you want to get confused and read a lot of misinformation, browse those threads. If you want to use an oil that BMW recommends, look in your owners manual. The capacity is 6.5 liters, which comes out to about 6.9 quarts. A lot of people put in 7 quarts and call it a day.

I knew someone would feel he/she needed to be the designated person to confront me with my reply, whom I then would have to explain cynicism.

Dear god some people here are unhelpful and rude. Get off your fucking high horses already. This is supposed to be a BMW "community".
If you're running a straight 6 in an average warm climate, you'll need:
SAE 10-40, full synthetic. If you properly drain your engine, you'll need about 6.5L, or about 6.8 quarts for you Americano's.
If you're in a much colder climate, check your owners manual for the oil chart.
Don't forget to replace the oil pan bolt washer, your O ring and filter as well.
Finally, if in doubt, just fill the engine with a bit of oil, let it sit, then check your dipstick. The oil mark would be directly in the middle of the two markings.

Relax man, yikes! Some people need to chill out, laugh a bit. Too many people seem to live their lives very uptight about things.
If you read your original post you don't seem too happy either, : /

I just got my 94 325is, has 160K well maintained miles, lots of highway miles, and it has pretty much always gotten Castrol GTX 10/40 conventional oil this whole time.
From lurking around this site a bit for a month or so, I noticed a couple posts here and there mentioning problems with top end variances when switching to synthetic at high mileage.
anyways, hmm, I think I'm going to stick with the castrol gtx 10/40 reg. oil for now, just do it fairly often.
going to do first change on it today. car seems kinda low compared to other cars I have had, should be fun, heh. and strange filter on top of engine, ok
