Im doing an engine swap for a guy I met not long ago. We were talking about parts he needed to get and he mentioned using the brake booster from his e34. I say... what e34?! He says "well...not really mine but, yeah my 535i."
I say dont rip it apart I want it. so he says okay, come pick it up. Free? yes.
STORY
Last august he posts the car for sale for 1500. A hispanic gentleman comes to look at it and tell Evan, my friend/ the car owner, his life story. Now, he noticed the upper radiator hose had a split and thus had leaked a bunch of coolant out so evan cut the hose and slid it further onto the fitting. The guy bought the car, so evan says "lemme run in and get you some water." the guy refuses and says hell just stop at a gas station down the road. He leaves. 20 minutes later Evan gets a call, "hey man it just quit on me" "well did you put water in it?" "no I was gunna try and make it home." He popped the head gasket. So he has it towed back to evans and leaves it. He calls periodically the next couple weeks saying he'll come get it, until the last evan hears is "it will be too much to fix, I may be moving back to st louis."
so fast forward to now, the car is still in my friends name, hes getting me a title. The car was broken into and the thieves got a 20 dollar radio but ruined the plastic surround and the door handle. But, so far Ive got Door handle, key and head gasket on my list to make it useable.
cliffs: I got a free e34.

nice!!! thats a very good deal for free. even if you dont get it running, the 5spd swap is worth a bunch of money, as well as a whole lot on the rest of the car

Thanks guys, words cant express how pumped I am to get this thing going. Ive got two cars to get rid of that my cash is tied up in. After that though its game on.
One question though, after I get the title and get a key from the dealer is there a way to have a new door handle with a lock that matches the key???

Here's the question, do you have the old tumbler from the handle that the thieves wiggled past? If so, just swap the tumbler out from a junk yard find...

Possibly, it may be laying down in the door cavity.

Merry Xmas! I traded a 940 Volvo for my 635CSI but you got a better deal!

A locksmith could make you a key. Or pull the passenger tumbler and swap them, or get an alarm with keyless entry.
Congrats, replace the head gasket, check the cooling system and get her back on the road!

You're probably going to need a door, that thing looks pretty bent up. Start cleaning, maybe you can save it with some elbow grease.

Im not bad at metal shaping but it looks like one of the mounts for the handle was ripped off too. Ill have to check it out in more detail.

AFAIK the dealer can provide a lock that matches the key you already have for the car, but to order it you need to have the papers on the car when you go down and order it to proove it's your car.
I'd skip the key tumbler though and get a keyless entry system and plunge the keyhole with something, atleast you have the trunk lock and the passenger side lock to open the car when you want to use the key and get into the car. Just a thought!

Yeah, Ive been thinking keyless entry. I didnt mention when the guy hauled the car back to my friends place he kept the title and the key.
So I dont have a key BUT, it sounds like I can get a lock to match once I get a key. Even if I do get keyless entry itd be a big pet peeve of mine to not have all the locks match.

Might want to investigate the title issue before putting any money into the car.

Oh trust me, no money will be spent til a title is had.

Clutch pedal on the floor. Slave cylinder necessary...
I have a black door from a 95 with black door panel. Throw me a couple bucks and pay for Greyhound shipping. Pretty sure I still have the key to it too.

I'll give you $40 for it, that's a pretty big profit.
Nice score man.
But seriously, if you want to sell it, I'd like to make a real offer on it after you get the title.
I wish I could get a free car, but it looks like you're going to have to work for it, but I think that's what makes it even better.

e34moneypit: once its running I may hit you up for that door.
The build shouldnt be bad, the head gasket and the door is all.

That's what I said, 'oil pan and clean up', turned into a loooong list haha. You'll get it though. It looks pretty clean, no rust or wrecks, nice paint, nice interior other than front console. how many miles on it?

Also looks like you will need to find a new clutch fan since yours has already appeared to have grenaded off a few blades. I am jealous. Similar and better in some ways to my 535 when I first picked it up, except mine cost me 800 bucks!

^^ Im gunna have to check that, didnt even notice it was missing any.
Supposedly it had 200k but the guy who gave it to me said the only reason he bought it at the time was that it drove and rode so tight compared to others hed driven that he couldnt let it go. Like I said, I do need a title before I can justify spending money, and then I need my truck to sell so that I can spend money. But yeah, Im good and familiar with the m30 already so this should be (fingers crossed) more fun than struggle.
edit, you know Ive got a new 400 dollar fan clutch off my old 3.3 ...

^^maybe not tho ;)
I had nothing to do today so I decided to start disassembly. I havnt got my manual yet but have had the accessories off the m30 before. Anywho got down to getting the manifold off and am stumped as to how to get the fuel rail/batch of wiring off the top of the intake.
The other question is, what color do I paint the stuff thats aluminum? Its getting painted anyway so the question is what color Im thinking red at the moment.
Oh, and one of the stupid screws that holds the distributor cap on sheared off. I can get it out after the head and all that comes out though I think but what the heck.

Fuel rail just needs to be yanked up and out.

The rail is bolted to the manifold though. And the wire pack is connected to the injectors..

I have a complete lock set (door handles, ign, trunk & glove box) and key.
A bit of work but if that floats your boat send me a PM
