View Full Version : Winter Question, To Lend or not to Lend

Hey guys,
So I'm leaving the country for 2 - 3 weeks and I have a choice of either leaving my 530I in a garage or leave it with my girlfriend to drive for those 3 weeks but her place has no garage and will be stored outdoors.
So question is simply, garage the car or keep it on the road? Northeast weather says snow is inevitable. My 530I hates not being on the road because when its stored for 1 week without being driven, it complains during start up (I need to check vacuum hoses or ICV tomorrow).
UNDERSTANDING my girlfriend is a good driver...what do you guys think / what would you do?

DON'T. Have her start it and let the engine idle for a few minutes a couple times a week.

is that alright for the engine? I've heard that you should least run it for a bit...

If the car is garage-kept, you should be fine doing that for a few weeks. I doubt you'll have any issues... a few weeks isn't that long. If you were leaving for a few MONTHS, then I'd probably say let her drive it.
Depending on her driving abilities (I can say this because I'm a woman, dammit), most women can't drive.... and there's a very good chance she'll wreck it in the snow. I'm super weird about letting ANYone drive my car besides myself. Better safe than sorry. When this car dies, it's going to be by my hand and my hand only.

+1 Cory summed it all up or you. Garage only.

Park it inside, put it up on jackstands, throw a clean car cover over it and unplug the battery. Done.

If 1989 is any reference to the year you were born, and she's younger/same age... I wouldn't. Women take longer to learn how to drive right. It's science.

I'm an exception, of course.

I think a lot of it has to do with whether or not she knows how to drive stick. Male or female, you can only be so disinterested in what's going on outside the car if you have to row your own gears.

For 3 weeks? Seriously? Dude, you're seriously anal. Or have too much time on your hands. ;)
Just park it. It'll be fine, I leave my Alfa parked outside for weeks at a time, and it's fine.
I've wrecked a friends car, never again.

I let my ex drive my 7, I really didn't stress it as I was kinda hoping it might get hit..... but, she didn't hurt it. BUT, no-one will be driving the 540. I know, it sounds weird, but this car is very different, and hence rather special to me. Don't let her drive it, your relationship would never be the same if she hit it.

This for sure!!!
She could be the best driver in the world but if something happened, you would still be pissed cause you weren't the one who did it and you would question her control/skills. It's just not worth the stress!

If you're worried about it, garage it and don't have her drive it. Especially if she has other ways to meet her transportation needs.

Have you seen her drive on snow? Could she pass a brake test on black ice in a parking lot?
If 2 no's then NO

I don't see any wrong in letting her driving it if you have confidence in her skills. Anyway she should be carefull since it's yours. And hey, in the worst scenario, it's the insurance company that will pay.
I wouldn't be afraid to park it for 3 week without starting it either. Here I always parked my summer car for 6 months or so with no startup. They always fired fine at the spring. Just make sure you unplug the batterie.

Don't let her touch it. It will be easier to crank for a few seconds more due to the vacuum leak than chancing it with your gf. I'm not saying she'd damage it, but I am saying its more likely to get damaged than sitting in your garage. Besides, garage car should stay a garage car.

In my experience, people who lend cars end up without them.

Park it and disco the battery.
It's a car, not a cat.
