Hey guys, long time reader, first time poster.
I wanted to get a new stereo system for my 530i with new speakers and an amplifier and subwoofer, but apparently the electronics system would need to be updated to work with any of the speakers I need, and I was just wondering if anybody knew how easy of a job that would be, and if not, how expensive it would be to get it done.
Thank you very much.

I can't provide any substantive help, but you might try the audio forum (http://forums.bimmerforums.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=127).

If you are planning on replacing the whole system, you have no issues. You will just have to run new wires to all the in cabin speakers from the amp...which is better anyways because the stock wires are thin and old.
It's a little unclear in your post if you are going to replace the head unit too...that would be crucial. If you want to use the stock head unit, don't...it is possible, but doesn't sound very good and you should just wait and do it all at the same time. There is a DIY section at the top of this forum...*cough*....check in there too...

as said earlier check the audio section out. But with what you want you don't need to upgrade your alternator, power wiring or battery. Just get a new deck, amp, a nice sub aimed through the ski pass, and a set of good components up front.
You can redo the speaker wiring but honestly the BMW twisted wiring isn't that bad. If you get decent to average stuff and do the install yourself you are looking at around $600 to $1000.
