no no he means the one like if you were sitting in the seat, you could lift you leg a bit and hit it with your right heel. i would love to know the answer to this. the e32 i had had a fuse socket in there. i think i read something about it being a ground break when BMW was shipping them. to disconnect battery

It is the ground break or at least the cover for it. The cover can be pulled off to reveal a bolt which has to be removed. Useful if you want to disconnect the battery without removing the rear seat. Also, be careful with that cover. It can break at the part that holds it in. I had to order another one.

Yeah +1 on that it's the main earth cable from the battery, that is used to disconnect the battery from the vehicle without lifting out the rear seat, simply pry the black little cover and then undo the 10mm bolt and the battery is disconnected.

yeah, or working on the electrical system. Avoids wear and tear on the battery terminal.

Exactly like that!
I bet 90% of the e34 owners doesn't even know that thing exists for these purposes. It's so well "hidden" that you never really notice it.

If you're sitting in the passenger side rear seat it will be by your back of your feets where the at the location that the battery is located. A black plastic piece that is ~1.5"x3" or something like that. Pry it off and there you will see the bolt.
Oh i remember now, i think you need to first undo that bolt and remove that plastic piece too and there you will find the bolt that holds the battery ground cable.. Anyways, it's MUCH easier to disconnect the battery from there rather than removing the seat and the things that goes along to get to the battery..

Now that is cool!! I never knew what it was for. Will it spark a little when the bolt is reattached like the cable will? :D will have to try it when I get home.

and why every single e34 guide tells you to remove the seat and disconnect the battery instead of using this?! this is genius. no more working on the electronics with my backseat laying on the roof!

I'm guessing the one who wrote the instructions never noticed or knew about it :) I mean, it's a small detail to be noted if you're not really looking for it you can't really see it's there... It's a place where you almost never look.
