I just experienced a problem with my 2010 535xi while accelerating onto the highway. At about 40mph I lost power and the "engine malfunction reduced power" light was displayed. I got off at the next exit and drove slow the rest of the way home (not far) As I sat in my driveway I heard a loud, constant noise. It sounded like a fan in high hear. Anyway I turned off the engine and it started back up and the light and the noise were gone. I will be calling the dealer tomorrow morning but I was wondering if anyone had any thoughts.

You haven't heard any of the issues about the twin turbo engine that has a constantly failing HPFP, ask the dealer about how many they replace there's a recall for certain models but idk if the brand new 5 was. Google HPFP which means high pressure fuel pump and you will find many angry people. Worst part is some people don't have any issues and some go through this 4 or more times.

Is this an F10 Problem or do you have an E60

E60 would be the HPFP, but if you have an F10 (i dont even think they make an xi) its something else........My E60 got its HPFP replaced early, and I have not had a problem since....

I just had this happen yesterday to my 2010 535i. It turned out to be a faulty fuel pump that BMW has been having problems with, only on the 35 series. My car also had a few program updates that will adress this same problem. Everything will be fixed today including all program updates.

Thank God for the BMW maintenance plan

E60 and E90-1-2-3 with turbo engine has a HPFP recall and some programming recall which can encounter a problem of lack of power from engine.
