So, as long as my car is keyed ON, my courtesy lights turn on as they should, with any a) door opening AND b) via the override switch on the front dome light at any other time.

If the car is OFF, and a door is opened, they flick on for a millisecond upon the door opening and then stay off until the car is turned on again.

What in the (fairly complex) interior light circuit would allow the lights to work perfectly as designed with the car running/keyed on but not when it's off?

because you have a stuck switch and it is timed out.

otherwise you would have had a flat battery a long time ago.

Hmm, all 4 door switches operate perfectly with the car on. Open the door, lights turn on. Shut door, they turn off. Also, there is no time element between working and not working. It's car on, they work as designed on all 4 doors, car off and they instantly no longer work. Heck, I could have the door open, car running, and as soon as I turn the key off the lights go out.

how about trunk light?
is that one shutting off?

If everything is off, then it has to be a gm problem.

Trunk light does shut off and I've replaced the GM and RM! This one's been elusive.
