Well, I just picked up my 2011 335is and it's a monster. I'm thrilled so far with the purchase, and I'd like posting a pic, but they won't let me.
Anyway, I'd be interested in hearing others' experiences with these cars. Issues, gripes, unexpected pleasant surprises, etc. Thanks!
Happy to email pics

Paid $58k, with the wheels, which was $500 over dealer invoice.

Sure, if you want a base M3, versus a fully loaded 335is. Don't forget, the V8 in the M3 is not everyone's idea of the ideal engine, especially for a track car. Personally, I'll take the turbo V6 over the normally aspirated V8 any day!

well, yea, I bought my 335i used for $36k....compare that to an '08 (at the time) m3 would have been in the low 50s (also used).
I couldn't afford it. But if I was buying new and it was only $2k difference....id be in the M in a heartbeat.
the only Ms i could get into for similar price was the e46 or older. I wasn't interested.

Actually if you have the track in mind, the M3 is much more suited for that. No cooling issues, a dry sump, LSD, and a better tuned suspension for the track. About the only thing you see to need to modify to get some serious time in the M3 on the track, is upgraded brakes. The 335* needs a lot more work to make it a competitive track machine. For occasional track use, it is probably not a big deal though.

All of that may be true, but I still argue the V8 is not an ideal track vehicle. I haven't had the experience, though.

Granted, the V8 M3 is a fantastic car. I'm not arguing that. Rather, a V6 tends to be more balanced and better suited for the track. See the Porsche 911. In addition, as a DD, the six certainly is more efficient.
I'm not arguing the 335is vs the M3 on the track; there is no comparison. Rather, I prefer a 6 in the M3 - and I think you'll see Bimmer go back to that - and in my daily driver.

Why would F1 use V8 engines then? Why do most super cars built for road and track use V8s? Sorry, your argument makes no sense.
By the way, BMW doesn't use V6, they use I6.

BTW, BMW is going back to a 6 in the m3, but I think its more for the new fuel standards.

I am not claiming to be anything. I am just making sure wrong information does not get passed as correct ones on here and also trying to see if you have a valid reason behind your claims, or if they are just based on things you may have heard incorrectly or deduced erroneously. If you have a logical explanation, please share it, we'd be glad to listen and learn. I am not giving you attitude here, I am just engaging in a technical discussion, sorry if I my background is too technical for some people's taste.

You just spent 60k on a regular 3 series car and believe it or not that's a very radical choice - one not many around here will agree with. Wherever you go, you will hear "why not pay an extra 5k (thats like $50/month more for 5 years?) and get a good sedan/coupe M3 (or make that 8-9k more for a fully loaded sedan)". While your reasons for the cost is warranted, realize that 58k is really a lot for a 3 series - don't get me wrong, look at my profile and see I also drive a 335, and mine is also a brand new and I don't own an M3. But my experience tells me the more you advertise the 335is you will get these arguments so if I were you, I'd just take it easy, enjoy the car and don't listen anyone but yourself.
As for track use, I don't think you realize the importance of high revving engines and their ability to keep the car on a very nice torque curve around the corners since their range is far more greater than that of the what 5500 rpm maxed out turbo curve 335 has? I know the car has 7000 rpm but it pretty much dies out after 5k rpm, if you are lucky 5500 rpm. Put yourself right next to an M3, you'll find yourself upshifting/downshifting between 2nd and 3rd as well as 3rd and 4th when he is far more range and control over his car since he can take it up all the way to 8400 and that range is not like the 335s very steep curve which would burn out so fast.
As many others would agree, 335is is not really a "track" car, in fact, it is the type of car that "looks" and "sounds" like a track car (M3) at a lesser price.
I'm hoping that you haven't based your decision on buying a 60k car on this and that furthermore you weren't thinking all along you were getting a track car buy getting a 335is.

There is a recent article in Bimmer making similar comparisons M3 vs 335is and conclude it is priced a little too close to the M3. They really liked the 335is though. I am sure the OP will really enjoy it.

Well there is another thread where someone spent $50k on a fully loaded 328i, so I'll give the OP more of a pass on his purchase (not much more though).
But like it has been stated you'll love your ride no matter what--enjoy it.

I am really considering the 335is because:
1. Depreciation on 335is will be lower that any other 3 series, because it is more of a rarity
2. Gas consumption on 335is vs M3 (if used as a daily driver)
3. A fully optioned out 335is costs LESS then the M3 (with Gas Guzzler tax as the only option)
335is is running the same performance HP (320) as it is being expected from the new 3 series coming out in 2012.

Yes, yes and yes. This car is wonderful around town due to loads of low-end torque. It's a 3 series, of course, but I have yet to see another on the road in the Bay Area. This does make it more of a rarity. It will take 10+ years, but this car could for sure become a collectors vehicle.

Nice rims :D. Glad to see another 335s on the streets. My leased 335is, fully loaded (minus the Harmon-Kardon sound :shifty) was msrp'ed at 61g's but i got it dropped down to 57g's. I pay 700 dollars a month and I am aware of the how much M3 with no options cost however for me i want the luxury that comes with the car and you pay almost 200-250 dollars more a month(for three years) for a fully loaded M3 vs a fully loaded 335is. But i guess you can say i "upgraded" from a 335i sedan and it IS leased and i have the option to get the M3 three years from now (if i can get a raise) so its all good. From a 335i stand point of view there is a huge difference in performance. I mean the steering is stiffer and feels more solid, better sounding exhaust in the back end and all the over heating issues are pretty much out the door from what BMW did with all that cooling. Although I cant really push the car to its limits as of now considering the fact I'm at 600 miles and need to brake the car in, I definitely feel a significant power difference in the 335s then in the 335. I mean a fully loaded 335i coupe with 19" rims goes for about 54/55g's so i don't know what all the fuss is really about. If you really think about it BMW should just get rid of all the 3 series models and just come out with the M3 if you want to argue "oh you can just spend an extra 4-8 grand to get the M3". Right? Anyways, what i really want to know is how it holds up with the S4 but that's for another day. Congrats on the car and rims.
Stay up.

I am talking to my dealer about ordering it, and I want the same color combo as yours. The only thing I'm not sure about is that the exterior effects seem to get lost with darker paint. On a white one you see everything and it stands out. The black one seems to downplay the looks alot. Do you have pictures of the back bumper? I want to see if you can tell the difference between stock 335i or not. Also, I'm wondering how the black chrome exhaust tips look with the black bumper.

Because its black on black it will down play the black obviously, but knowing you that the grills and and exhaust tips are silver on the 335i people should know what's up. But i recommend the le mans blue or the titanium silver. I got the alpine white because the dealership did not have a blue one with navi and the year end sale was ending that day. They had a red one but i don't think i can live with red for 3 years let alone one day. Black on black looks just as clean. I'm sure you will be pleased either way. Good luck with you purchase.

Congrats on the buy man beautiful car. As far as all the talk about a 6 being better on the track than the 8, if thats the case why doesnt BMW use the I6 for racing? just saying. There is no arguement whats so ever about the 335 being better than the M on the track. Last time I checked the M3 was bred for the track and has been since the first generation. Being a fan of the I6 is great, its a great engine in a great car but doesnt compare to the 4.4 they have in the M3 today which puts out almost an extra 100HP. Also in the arguement of fuel consumption Top Gear did a test with a M3 vs a Prius on their test track. Ten laps at the same speed the M3 avg more MPG than the Prius which goes to show its all on how you drive.

Limited production car, very nicely done sir.
