I recently bought 2011 328xi.

Its my first time driving BMW and I need your help.

The problem is that the car consumes so much gas :)

Most of cars slow down generally, but 328xi seems to slow down really dramatically and I assume this is why it consumes more gas.

It feels like engine brake. I meant in D mode.

As far as I know, in DS mode, to have much more power, the shift stays in lower stage.

I have driven so many other brands such as toyota lexus honda mazda.

And it feels so different.

Am I the only one who feels this difference?

When I'm in first in my manual I feel a sudden deceleration when I let off the gas. So that part isn't in your head. However, I don't feel like that kind of aggressive engine breaking happens enough to have a significant impact on my mileage. I don't know if this is because I put it in neutral when I roll up to a light or not.

Engine braking does not consume gas - if you watch your mileage guage, you'll notice that it goes to 50+ mpg when you let off the gas.

It's quite typical for people driving these cars in stop-and-go city traffic to get only 20 mpg, often even less.
