View Full Version : Post Your e34 Receipts

I was recently organizing some paperwork and thought it would be interesting to see how well the e34 section keeps track of their receipts. It's both disgusting and suprising how much money i've invested in my "worthless" 530/5 since 2004. I know some of you have me beat by a long shot.. Can you prove it? :stickoutt Visual Evidence is a plus!
How much money have YOU invested in your e34? Please state the price you paid for the vehicle and add up all your receipts for both parts and/or labor done to the vehicle. Gas, Insurance, Title fees, Sets of wheels etc is NOT included.

All said and done... $8000 for the car and $10,033.90 to date for parts and labor done to the 530/5.
$18,033.90 in just about 6 years. :help

Well, firstly you have to consider that I'm outside the US, so you can expect things to be much more expensive. Anyway, I've paid us$ 8,000. for my 535i in 2009, and so far I've spent more than us$ 12,000.00 to make it reach the stage it is now.

Obviously, this may sound insane, but I'm making my childhood dream come true.

I payed $12,000 for my 1989 535i 10 years ago and have only put about $3,000 into repairs. Sounds to me like you own a money pit! The most reliable and breakdown free car I have ever owned!

So far in the 3 months of ownership ive spent ~$300. Slave cylinder, v-belts, oil change and euro trim. this is just the beginning. im trying to do all the maintanence work myself. i know for sure the valve adjustment is going to get done by someone else. not looking forward to that, but i still have some time

I'm guessing I'm in about $7000-8000 including the car. That does not include any upgrades (although, I'd say I'm only in about $2000 considering I've bought and sold several things).

EDIT: I've had the car for about 7 years now.

I have no clue. Cost of the car was $3800, but I payed around $2900 since I took over the payment after the car was purchased. I haven't payed any labor, did it all on my own. Parts and upgrades is probably around $1300 (excluding tires/wheels). So $4200 so far? Im getting off easy haha. If you wanna add stereo in to that, add at least $2k more with the different components I have/am using. It saves a lot since I can use my school shop to do the labor, and through my class I get discounts at a few different parts stores, (napa, car quest, baxters, and autozone). I will continue to dump money in to her as long as I can afford to. I said in one of the many insurance threads we had here that the only way I will get rid of her is if she is totaled beyond repair.

But Hey its whats i want. i dont mind working on it......i guess.lol.

I am right there with TouringDan. I have almost 16k in repairs from the dealer starting in 1995 going all the way to 2008 when i took over the car. The price tag on my car was 44,195. Holy crap! Most expensive repair that i have found in the three inch thick packet of papers i have is $3200 for new struts on all 4 corners as well as sway bars and all the front suspension bits. That is what minnesota roads will do to a car....but this repair was in 2005 so i guess the suspension was 10 years old.

Upgrades are a whole new story. I keep track of all the upgrades i have done to the car, along with installation costs, and it is well over 2k so far. The nex coils, the wheels, the stereo, the tints, the headlights, the billy sports and hr springs, skid plate, parrot bluetooth kit and all of this adds up realllll quick. I wouldn't be surprised if i am well over 5k into the car within the next year or two. Wouldn't be surprised at all.

To me, these costs are completely justified. To many, they are far from justified because of different priorities. All i know is that i have ZERO plans of getting rid of this car within the near future....if ever unless it gets totaled or something awful happens to it. It is my first car, and means a hell of a lot more to me than the m5 does. I have thought about selling the m5 so i have some more cash to work with for the 525....but i don't want to start a turbo build on the car yet and that is what i would do with the extra cash soooo....yea.

wow long winded.

I'm right around $10k on the 535 after nearly 6 years

and in the few short months I've owned the 540 I've spent about $7400 between supercharger, suspension, and misc might-as-well parts I've gathered in anticipation of thrashing this beast for a while.

both of those include purchase price. I think if I sold both I could do a bit better than break even if I did it right.

Though if you included sets of tires I'd be another $4-6k or so deep and total insurance another $5-6k (hooray for being young) so all in all I'd end up losing a fair amount of money if I sold them.

But man the F10 550 or F1 750/760 is really calling my name. It would hurt to give them up but they'd make a nice down payment...probably not though, I loves me the E34's!

I don't keep receipts as most of the stuff I buy is just the regular tune-up stuff anyway or something that no-one else would buy for their E34. I get crazy deals on all my other parts, so not even going to post any prices up.

How to buy and drive a 5 series BMW for only 2500 a year or 18 cents a mile:

I paid 32k for an almost new 1992 535i 5spd in 1994 with 28k miles.

Over 16 years, I have spent around 4k plus several sets of tires for a total of about 8k in typical maintenance parts. 250k miles on it now.

No major problems just the typical bushings, struts, clutch, cooling, brakes and maintenance items.

The only labor costs were for a new clutch. I have easily saved $6k in labor by doing my own work.

Total ownership costs, about 40k total over 16 years = only 2500 a year!
(The car is maybe worth 2k now on paper but worth lots more to me)

The cost to own and drive any decent car that is maintained by a dealer is between $4k and $6k a year so I have saved $40k easily by keeping this car not even counting the direct losses that I would have gotten by buying/trading every 4-5 years.

The savings are still adding up since this is my daily car.

Seriously? Proper maintenance is not cheap buddy. If you do the suspension properly, which includes springs, shocks, bushings, etc.. you're looking at a good $2,000. Move to the cooling system which is a good $500, then brakes, wheels, tires, and other misc items. Everything adds up rather quickly. If you take for example the invested $6,000 and just blow it on a turbo setup, then yeah you got a lot of power but your suspension is crap, brakes are crap, etc.

At 2000$ you can have the ground control kit wich is for racing purpose..

Don't get stock suspension for that price.. seriously.

For the same price of a stock piece you can have a better aftermarket one most of the time.

Brakes and bushing and all that is normal maintenance on a car. And that don't cost 5000$ a year. Unless you always bring you car to the bmw dealer maybe..

But then, maybe my judgement is biased because I do all my work myself so I don't realy know the price at the garage..

Thrust arms, lower arms, tie rods, sway bar links, and bushings for the front are nearing $500. New shocks and springs will run near $600. While you're there you might as well redo the rear suspension too, so factor that in. I do all the work myself but it still is not cheap.

Have you ever compared part prices from your car to one of those two? It is nowhere near the same ballpark.

I paid 5500 for my car a few months back. I have 10k into it already. A supercharger and paint job are next, those are sure to be insanely cheap:rolleyes:(

2400 for the UUC V8 clutch/flywheel kit, I would've saved only a few hundred by going OEM. You can't really DIY around the price of parts.

Not at all. I have owned quite a few E34's and they have all have had similar paperwork histories. It helps me keep track of what parts I have laying around (from replacing good parts with aftermarket parts) and dates/times for all fluids/maintenance parts/replacements. It's a good way to keep up on what you have done and what you need. Also, I find people are much more willing to give asking prices if you have that kind of history. I can PROVE I took care of this car. :buttrock

Aug 2009 purchase price: 3700
Repair maintenance to date : 1100 (radiator, suspension pieces, brakes, misc things)
Non-repair items: 900 (wheels/tires, BavAuto springs, Bilstein rears)

Total nut: 5700, and everything works as advertised except for drivers rear window and remote locking (due to sticking lock)

So all in all, I am very happy, especially seeing some of the numbers thrown around upthread.

I highly doubt you could do it for 1k.....why not sell it on here for 1.5k and make a killing? My setup can handle whatever is thrown at it.

ESS sells their kit for 6k, that is pretty expensive for stage 1 in my book. I found one used for 3k though.

I highly suggest you see my signature ;) My clutch was $495 for the pressure plate and $90 for the clutch disc. Add in the flywheel this time, my clutch will come in at around $850 with a billet chromoly flywheel. That leaves about $150 of wiggle room under $1,000. The UUC clutches do not hold much. Maybe 450 tq. Thats not much. Mine held approximately 628 ft lb of torque for 1/4 of what yours cost ;)

Wouldn't have to make one or sell one "that cheap" its all off the shelf stuff man.

www.clutchnet.com They have setups for M5s. They'll build pretty much anything you want if you call them up. You can see the M5 pressure plate is $575 and the clutch disks are $155 or so for a 4 puck unsprung. Their prices went up a little bit. Looks like a 240mm, so they likely have a flywheel also. That's $730 without flywheel. F1 Racing makes a good E36 flywheel (240mm) for $250 or so, which is what I'll be using. No where near UUC pricing though, and no chatter at idle :)

But wait - I think Jab was talking about M60 bits. I know I'm interested in the UUC kit as it seems to be the best option for an M60 car. I like the bigger clutch disc setup, and the lightweight flywheel is the point of the purchase. If you know how to get a nice lightweight flywheel for an M60 I'm all ears, and even better if it can use the bigger V12 clutch. The majority of the cost of that UUC kit seems to be the flywheel, as they admit the rest of the kit is a stock 850CSi setup. I'd love to go lightweight, but it's pricey, so I'm looking for options. If you've got info or hookups, share? :)

Keep in mind a lot of my maint. has been done with employee pricing.. Ouch.
Kind of a waste for a 530/5 that just sits collecting dust.

Hey, my car's from Kuni in Oregon as well! Still have the original Kuni plate surrounds.

Kuni will never touch my car again. :shiftyCliffs of the backstory:

leaking output shaft seal on tranny...was replaced by Kuni for the PO 4 months before I purchased the car...2 months after purchase, it starts leaking again...BAD! So under BMW's parts warranty, Kuni replaced the seal again as well as the shift shaft seal for no charge. 6 months after that...leaking again. Kuni told me that I would have to pay this time...I made it clear that wouldn't be the case and they fixed it 'right' that time. Hasn't leaked since. Over 15 years of BMW ownership, and I have never spent one dime at Kuni. Rasmussen is where it's at!

Fox

Check out the link I posted - clutchnet will make whatever you want and already list some V8 M5 stuff which should work as well. If they don't have anything or won't make it (which would surprise me!) you should contact F1 Racing. They make a VERY nice billet steel (14 or 15 lb) flywheel for the M5x motors.

I don't keep my receipts...

The 540 has had about 400 bucks worth of parts put on it since I've bought it, mostly preventive maintenance...

The 525... I've put maybe 500-700 in it in almost 3 years and about 70k miles. I did do a trans swap, but I had the stuff already from a previous car. Im not counting the wheels on either car, but with buying stuff localy from the salvage yards and or craigslist and reselling them, they are still basically free.

First E34 (530i/5) - 2650 car, 550 for assorted gaskets, water pump, and lots of tune up items. That was before I knew where to get everything. Sold three months later for 3800

Current E34 (525i/5) - 2150 car, ~750 on preventative maintenance items and tires. Bought with 159K miles, now at 183K miles.

How the heck do you guys pay so much???

was given the car by someone who thought it was all but trash. just needed a valve adjustment. total parts were maybe $350ish or so? plus $150 for tires. so all in all maybe $500ish into my car? needs some more lovin' though... can't wait to get her some parts she needs

Out of respect for everyone else (ok mostly myself) I won't post any receipts or spreadsheets. Not because the majority is not maintenance, but because I might come to my senses and realize I've lost my mind.

This thread couldn't handle it. At this point, probably over 50 big ones discounting the engine I am working on now.

You're the only other person in the same ball park.

$8500 purchase price
12 years of ownership
I can't put a value to any of the following.
4 engines
2 transmissions
2 differentials
5 clutches
3 flywheels
2 interiors
6 different sets of wheels (forget about counting tires)
2 different types of forced induction
6 hours of dyno time
3 ECUs
extra body parts
4 suspensions
3 brake setups
and I don't have an receipts because I've done all the work starting in 2000. I put it at or around 5,000 hours

Value = priceless

Ditto. I also started going to a trustworthy cash only mechanic ;)

I do have a ton of receipts but they are 90% PO. Two years ago I spent just under $7k for it on eBay and the toll is approaching $10k. Since it came with an extra set of OEM 18" M Pars that I sold for $1100, I'm still under $10k :D

I projected $15k for 5 years but it will likely be $20k. That's $20k for everything except gas over 5 years. Cheaper and more smiles than a honda.

Iv'e been avoiding this thread for days... I'm probably around 16 to 20k. FML. Its bad when you have to think of it in terms of plus or minus 5 thousand on a car like this.

One day if I come across a bottle of Xanex I will add up a parts list and a labor list. Although most of it within the last 3 years was almost done solely by me and friends. But still :/

My wife reminded me recently that I've spent over $2k on the e34 this year. I reminded her that swapping in the manual likely added value to the touring, and it's still way cheaper than paying for depreciation.

I have a spreadsheet somewhere, I'm probably at about $5k in expenses over 4 years, not bad. Not including purchase price of course.

I think these guys are figuring in their own wrench time as $$$...because you are bat-shit insane if you spent $20k on a 525i. I would toss it into the forrest and go buy another $2k 525 to thrash...then repeat....10 times.

Just for giggles, I added up everything in my binders...oil changes to valve cover gaskets...the only thing not in there is the orig. purchase price or the price I paid for it. That was $17587.23 since the car was new in 1992...now I don't have the baddest 525 on the planet...but it's very well maintained and has a lot of bolt ons...so spending 20k on one in 3-5 years better produce a show quality car, or a stupid fast one.

Just maintenance over the span of 8 years I am probably somewhere in the $4-5k range. That would include new front end components, a new ac compressor, a new waterpump, new clutch, new fan clutch, new expansion tank, new radiator... Not too bad. Mechanic has all of my records on his computer... it's been going to him since I got it (except for the year and a half the car was in AL)

Almost forgot... add another $1800 for a new heater control valve, wheel bearing and transmission that's currently being installed.

well...bought the car in 2005 with 80k miles. 5k. Then for the first two years, I had a shop fix it when needed. That adds up. And since 2007 or 2008 I have done most things myself. But, let's see: 2 oil pans ( I was a dumbass and that was during my lost week that lasted 3 years), water pump, fuel pump, radiator, alternator, rotors, other maintenance stuff, then i dunno front end and rear end suspension rebuild, tint, bilsteins sports, vogtland springs, euro smileys, HIDs, amber fogs, euro trim, two sets of smoked rears, eisenmann exhaust, tires, two sets of different wheels, two different stereo systems (that added up big time), 5 speed swap (not done that cheap) UUC flywheel and stuff, m5 brakes, headers, S50 cams, software, vanos stuff (which I still have to install). there is also a ton of stuff I am missing too. and just my own labor, but still. that's a small part.

Dude there is just a ton that adds up. I have a problem.

Well.. lets see. Keep in mind I'm from Norway. The most expensive country in the world (i assume).
The car, three years ago: 20 000
6-Speed conv. incl. JBR Flywheel and Spec 3+ clutch: 5000
Rims: 4000
Coilovers: 2000
maintenence/smaller upgrades: 2-3000
Supercharger: 4000
Probably forgetting allot, but it still adds up to about 36-37000 USD
All work carried out by my self, no workshop hours.

to comparison a used 2000 E39 M5 is at about 70-80 000USD

Keep things in perspective, Calculate the depreciation on a new somewhat equivalent BMW. Add the interest on the loan. $20K on an E34 over 3 or 4 years looks pretty good?

If I was to buy an E34 540i from the States, I would first have to pay VAT/Tax at 25% of the purchase+shipping value. And to get the car registered in Norway, I would have to pay about 25 000 USD in additional tax. That tax is based on weight, engine volume, horsepower and the age of the car. A so called "environment" tax or something.

A new Ford mustang GT500 is about 350 000 USD over here.

The interior is nice, the body leaves a bit to be desired. The idiot who owned the car before me buffed it a little bit too much, and there are terrible swirls in the beautiful Oriental Blue paint. There is some rust bubbling under the paint around the wheel wells, the fuel nozzle, and the rear window. The molding are also falling off. Aside from that, the brake/fuel lines are starting to rust. While the body work and brake lines are not a big deal (I stripped/repainted my motorcycle and I owned a Ranger, which blew 2 brake lines and had a caliper fall off), but I don't have an indoor garage to work in (fixing the rust on the rear windshield would require the removal of said windshield).
